{"id":220577,"date":"2019-10-15T06:00:37","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T04:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/?p=220577"},"modified":"2019-10-15T09:37:02","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T07:37:02","slug":"enjoying-cup-tea-laugh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2019\/10\/15\/enjoying-cup-tea-laugh\/","title":{"rendered":"Enjoying a cup of tea and a laugh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebrskool Germiston hall was full of smiles and laughter as guests enjoyed the SAVF Greater Germiston Care of the Aged International Tea for the Elderly last Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The tea was a special occasion, not only because it brought together residents from several of the SAVF&#8217;s old age homes and their families, but also because it celebrated International Day for Older Persons.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/219739\/elderly-savf-residents-enjoy-bingo-morning\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elderly SAVF residents enjoy bingo morning<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;The event was a huge success and a ball of fun for the elderly and their families and friends who attended the event,&#8221; said Elly Pergoo, a SAVF social auxiliary worker.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The guests, who were dressed to a spring theme, decorated their tables and enjoyed tasty treats and refreshments.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;There were prizes to be won for the best table decorations, the best-dressed guest and the best dancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Enjoying a cup of tea and a laugh and some music\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WYigpLVr8VQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The tea also aimed to raise some much-needed funds for SAVF Greater Germiston Care of the Aged to continue its work.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation, situated in Elspark, has been delivering services to the elderly community of Germiston for many years and only receives a 75 per cent subsidy from the Department of Social Development.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Events like this help raise the outstanding 25 per cent, which we use towards our running costs,&#8221; said Pergoo.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees were entertained throughout the event by entertainer Matt Stern and listened to a talk from motivational speaker Anneke Liebenberg, from AVBOB senior citizens service unit.<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/216336\/fun-and-laughter-fill-the-week\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fun and laughter fill the week<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;It is important to celebrate days like International Day for the Elderly and hold fun-filled events like today&#8217;s tea because many elderly people have forgotten how to have fun or even socialise, especially the ones based at elderly facilities,&#8221;
