There is a 10km run and 5km fun run.

Proceeds from the run are given to Reach for Recovery, a breast cancer support group.

The Drop Off a Pair and Show You Care campaign also sees hundreds of running shoes given to children in need each year.

Entry forms are available at all SPAR stores, and you can actually register for the race at many of these stores until 1 October.

Online entries can be made at www.sparjoburgrace.co.za and this site also lists all the stores where one can register in-store. These entry forms can be found all over Joburg and Tshwane and even as far away as Potchefstroom, Rustenburg, Secunda, Vereeniging and Sebokeng.

This means you can collect your race T-shirt, race number (with timing chip) and temporary licence, if applicable, somewhere close to you. That saves you having to go to Marks Park in the days before the race to register.

However, late entries will be taken at Marks Park from 2 to 5 October.

Schools that wish to enter the competition for valuable computer and printing equipment sponsored by Mercer must submit their entries before 24 September to qualify.

With government schools closing for the September holidays, it is important for them to get those entries in as soon as possible.

Organisers encourage community members to take advantage of the cheaper prices of pre-entries, rather than wait until the late entries open.

Rene Kalmer with her daughter Karli van wyk.
