educated about the dangers of diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cDiabetes is a worldwide epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatistics on the disease are horrible, with one in 10 adults reportedly being diagnosed with diabetes.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>These were the words of Dr Andreas Stavrides, a specialist physician at Life Roseacres Hospital, ahead of a Diabetes Awareness Workshop at the hospital last Saturday.<\/p>\n<div class='tie-fluid-width-video-wrapper tie-ignore-fitvid' style='margin-bottom: 30px;'>\n\t\t\t<iframe style='width: 100%; min-height: 300px; aspect-ratio: 16\/9;' src='https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/oGzcOdtsddw' loading='lazy'><\/iframe>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The hormone insulin moves sugar from the blood into your cells to be stored or used for energy.<\/p>\n<p>With diabetes, your body either doesn\u2019t make enough insulin or can\u2019t effectively use the insulin it does make.<\/p>\n<p>To help raise awareness, the hospital held the workshop and invited Stavrides, dietician Anita Mostert and podiatrist Jade Young to speak to the community about the disease and its treatment and management.<\/p>\n<p>Before Stavrides began his talk, guests were invited to have their weight, blood glucose, heart rate and blood pressure checked by Sr Doreen Seopa and student nurse Miedzo the spotlight<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThere are two types of diabetes,\u201d began Stavrides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first, type 1 diabetes, occurs mainly in children and is when the immune system (the body\u2019s system for fighting infection) attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second, type 2 diabetes, is most common in adults.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is reported that 425 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with diabetes, is that common enough?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means this isn\u2019t a disease we have controlled, despite education, despite technology and despite social media, the number of people with the disease is still rising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stavrides, who focuses on type 2 diabetes, went on to explain that a patient will seldom suffer from just diabetes, as the condition can lead to other health complications, such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, kidney damage, eye damage, foot damage and skin conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome early symptoms of diabetes can be unexplained weight loss, poydipsia (excess thirst), polyuria (frequent urination), blurred vision and recurrent infections,\u201d said Stavrides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTreatment is available for the disease, in both its forms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut patients need to be aware what is required from them to optimise therapy and prolong life.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a class=\"anchor_post\" about maintaining a balanced and healthy diet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiet can make a huge difference in the maintenance and management of chronic illnesses,\u201d Mostert said.<\/p>\n<p>Anita offered a tip for busy people when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry to prepare meals in advance,\u201d Mostert said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOften we will resort to fast food because when we get home after a long day we are too tired to cook or don\u2019t have time to cook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young explained that early detection and treatment with regard to injuries of the feet is key for a diabetic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything goes wrong, seek help immediately,\u201d said Young.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would also recommend that patients with diabetes don\u2019t walk barefoot, get all ingrown toenails seen to by a professional and keep blood glucose as low as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, guests were treated to some healthy treats.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery
