In an effort to curb crime in Katlehong and increase police visibility, Katlehong SAPS conducted several stop-and-search operations last Wednesday and Thursday.

During the operations, carried out by members of the Katlehong Police Crime Prevention Unit and detectives from the Katlehong Police Station, eight suspects were nabbed.

The suspects were arrested for various offences.

Charges included:

• Malicious damage to property: 1

• Shoplifting: 1

• Theft: 1

• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm: 2

• Attempted fraud: 1

Katlehong SAPS station commander Brig Sammy Thambo encouraged the community to report crimes as soon as they happen and in turn pushed officers to make speedy arrests.

“As soon as the docket is registered and the suspect is known, police must immediately go out to arrest a suspect,” he said.

He further encouraged the community to not withdraw cases at the police station.

“Cases should only be withdrawn through the courts and not at the police station,” he said.

“The continuous withdrawal of cases can result in an increase in false cases being opened.”

All of the arrested suspects appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s court where the cases were postponed for various reasons.
