{"id":201885,"date":"2019-04-16T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/201885\/imademymark-future-leaders-not-interested-in-2019-elections\/"},"modified":"2019-04-17T15:53:42","modified_gmt":"2019-04-17T13:53:42","slug":"imademymark-future-leaders-not-interested-in-2019-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2019\/04\/16\/imademymark-future-leaders-not-interested-in-2019-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"#IMadeMyMark: Future leaders not interested in 2019 elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first general elections in South Africa, which were inclusive of people of all races, were held in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Results from those elections inaugurated the ANC as the ruling party and since then South Africa was introduced to a new constitution and a democracy, bringing an official end to apartheid.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>This year marks 25 years of democracy.<\/p>\n<p>In this 25th year, citizens will once again take to the polls on May 8 to take part in the sixth general elections.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>While it is everyone\u2019s democratic right to vote, some young people are not interested in exercising that right.<\/p>\n<p>Hlengiwe Thabethe, a 25-year-old from Lambton, is just as old as our democracy and as a young adult, she feels excluded by political parties running for election.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201886\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201886\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-201886\" src=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/15GCNGENERALVOTE_32798-520x390.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/15GCNGENERALVOTE_32798-520x390.jpg 520w, https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/15GCNGENERALVOTE_32798-270x203.jpg 270w, https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/15GCNGENERALVOTE_32798-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dwu32cgxelq1c.cloudfront.net\/local_newspapers\/sites\/31\/2019\/04\/15GCNGENERALVOTE_32798.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-201886\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hlengiwe Thabethe (25) from Lambton finds no political party\u2019s manifesto resonates with her and that in itself is alarming.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>ALSO READ:\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/200933\/imademymark-st-catherines-learners-share-their-reasons-for-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\">#IMadeMyMark: St Catherine\u2019s learners share their reasons for voting<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cI believe in voting for change,\u201d said Hlengiwe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough I understand the importance and regard it as irresponsible not to vote, I will not be voting this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo political party truly invests in the youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they say during their election campaigns and what we experience post-elections are always two realities in contrast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Hlengiwe was not around during the apartheid era, she feels there were conducive systems in place, which helped better the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, segregation was wrong. A lot of things were wrong with our history, but when we changed to a democratic nation we could have kept some systems, like the education system,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state of education in our country is appalling.<\/p>\n<p>A large number of children drop out of school and aren\u2019t questioned for doing so.<\/p>\n<div class='tie-fluid-width-video-wrapper tie-ignore-fitvid' style='margin-bottom: 30px;'>\n\t\t\t<iframe style='width: 100%; min-height: 300px; aspect-ratio: 16\/9;' src='https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Wjzno2tenTg' loading='lazy'><\/iframe>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>It should be mandatory for children to be in school to avoid being led into harmful activities such as experimenting with drugs and increasing pregnancy statistics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government should ensure more learners are in school and ensure skills development training is introduced at an early age to accommodate learners who are not academically inclined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDropping out to just roam the streets should not be an option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Hlengiwe, during the series of negotiations between the then ruling party, the National Party, and various organisations including the ANC, the public should have been consulted for a more comprehensive deal to be brokered between the organisations involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a democracy, but we have no economic freedom,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see people, who look like me, struggling to make ends meet every day, but we must just be happy that we can live and work in neighbourhoods in which we were previously banned from. That is not enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s worse because the leaders we should be looking up to do not inspire us at all. All we see from them are flashy cars and houses on Instagram. Citizens are raising capital to open gay clinics while we\u2019re being publicly shamed in public clinics and hospitals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mhero also believes there is a problem in the education system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpportunities are scarce and far in between.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot everyone can afford to go to university, so people should have access to Seta programmes to upskill themselves and learn about various industries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mhero, not having money to further his education should not be the reason why he is excluded from securing a meaningful degree that could change his life.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Twenty five year old Germiston resident, Mhero Maphuhla, shares his views on political parties\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j6-ylDFgFJw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the youth we need to invest in ourselves and stop looking to the government for help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake a look at foreign nationals who come to our country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey start little tuck shops to make ends meet and in turn, we loot their shops because they\u2019re \u2018stealing our jobs\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, we have never thought to start our own businesses,\u201d Mhero said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Africa is home to different races, nationalities, beautiful cultures and people with different skills and we share the land, thus we should all contribute in developing the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All political parties have the same approach, according to Mhero, they identify each other\u2019s flaws, make empty promises and perpetuate corruption once elected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe claim to be a country that has socially evolved, but there is still no provision made for the LGBTQI+ community.
