A number of Germiston residents were spotted with colourful new hairstyles, last weekend.<\/p>\n

The occasion the 16th annual Cansa Shavathon.<\/p>

The Cansa Shavathon, which is one of South Africa\u2019s best-loved annual events, allows people from all walks of like the opportunity to show their support for a very worthy cause – namely showing solidarity with those affected by cancer.<\/p>\n

Patients losing their hair is a common side-effect of many cancer treatments so shaving your head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors and one of the focuses of the Shavathon.<\/p>

But not everyone can shave their hair or is brave enough to, so for this, colouring your hair or paying a \u2018Bail Out Fee\u2019 has become a popular option.<\/p>\n

This year Fortitude Hair and Beauty Salon and The Reef Shopping Centre each hosted an event giving the community the opportunity to show their support.<\/p>\n

Fortitude Hair and Beauty Salon, who raised R3 660, held their event at the salon in Lambton, and the team were in high spirits throughout the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a very fun day,\u201d said Gabriela Kleynhans, the owner of Fortitude Hair and Beauty Salon.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a little slower than we had anticipated but I think we still did well.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe sold lots of cookies and cupcakes.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked why she hosts the annual event Gabriela said, \u201cIt is my way of trying to give back, trying to make a difference in a stranger\u2019s life, even if it\u2019s small.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also love that the hair donated goes to making wigs for children.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe children have so much to deal with and a wig can make them feel slightly better and I think that is just amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hailey Walker (4) from Lambton showed her support in a big way at Bedford Centre\u2019s Cansa Shavathon when she cut and donated her ponytail.<\/p>\n

\u201cHailey decided to cut and donate her hair so that, in her words, a sick girl can also have hair,\u201d explained her mother Nikita.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me it was a wow moment as we have family members and my best friend who have been affected by cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer dad Neil and I were so proud that our little girl would do such a selfless act for others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hailey donated 23cm of hair.<\/p>\n

Her dad and brother Tristan (1) joined in on the action having their hair sprayed.<\/p>\n

The team at local company RE\/MAX All Stars once again showed their support for Cansa with a workplace Shavathon, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The team raised more than R4 000 through the initiative and were thrilled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole office had a lot of fun showing their support, getting their hair sprayed and making donations,\u201d said sales and marketing associate Nadia Aucamp.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe at RE\/MAX All Stars are passionate about supporting worthy causes like Cansa.\u201d<\/p>\n
