warns residents to be alert to possible flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) is warning residents and industry and business communities to be extra cautious abput possible flooding in flood-prone areas.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after the weather forecast predicted an 80 to 100 per cent chance of showers and thundershowers going into the weekend.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHeavy rain may also result in flooding of rivers, low-lying bridges, open trenches, furrows, culverts and even canals, which can cause damage to adjacent areas and those downstream,\u201d said district manager media liaison William Ntladi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents with children walking to school are also warned to be alert and cautious about their children\u2019s safety with regard to the crossing of flooded streams.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Ntladi added that drivers and pedestrians should avoid crossing under subway bridges, low-lying bridges and swollen streams where water is above ankle you can\u2019t see the road surface because of flood water, turn around and use an alternative road,\u201d Ntladi said.<\/p>\n<p>He also advised the community to listen out for weather warnings and to obey the instructions of DEMS or EMPD officials.<\/p>\n<p>DEMS is on high alert for any eventualities that may occur as a result of the rain.<\/p>\n<p>Communities affected by flooding or any life-threatening emergencies are advised to call the emergency call centre on 011 458 0911, 112 from a cellphone or the national emergency number 10177 immediately for swift intervention to take
