{"id":195134,"date":"2019-01-16T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T04:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/195134\/consider-all-the-costs-before-committing-to-a-tertiary-course\/"},"modified":"2019-01-16T08:58:09","modified_gmt":"2019-01-16T06:58:09","slug":"consider-all-the-costs-before-committing-to-a-tertiary-course","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2019\/01\/16\/consider-all-the-costs-before-committing-to-a-tertiary-course\/","title":{"rendered":"Consider all the costs before committing to a tertiary course"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deciding to get a tertiary qualification is a big commitment, both financially and in terms of the time and effort you\u2019ll need to invest to get your degree or diploma.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Department of Higher Education 2015 report, 47.9 per cent of South African university students do not complete their degrees.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>This high drop-out rate is not only due to poor academic performance, but also because many students run out of money before they graduate, even with government funding for some students.<\/p>\n<p>Starting a course if you can\u2019t afford to complete it makes it much less likely you\u2019ll ever go back and get the qualification.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re able to obtain a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) loan or bursary or your parents or relatives apply for a loan to help you, here are some things to think about:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Can you afford the university, technikon or college you want to attend?<\/p>\n<p>You may have your sights set on a particular institution, but it\u2019s worth doing some research.<\/p>\n<p>First-year university fees for a BA degree in 2017 varied from R34 254 to R49 440, a difference of over R15 000.<\/p>\n<p>Also, bear in mind that in South Africa only public institutions can call themselves universities.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\">ALSO READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/195103\/new-year-great-time-revisit-business-security-measures-make-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\">New year \u2013 great time to revisit business security measures and make changes<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Private higher education institutions can offer exactly the same range of qualifications up to doctoral degree level, but may not use the term \u2018university\u2019 even though they are subject to the same regulation and quality assurance.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s sensible to research all the options that are available before deciding which is the best for you.<\/p>\n<p>You can find a list of accredited institutions on the website of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and follow the qualifications and part qualification link.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, the most expensive may not always be the best option for you.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Other than tuition fees, what other costs should you consider?<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the course fees, you\u2019ll have to pay application and registration fees, and some bursaries and funders do not pay these costs.<\/p>\n<p>If the institution is far from home, you\u2019ll have to budget for food, accommodation and possibly even data or Wi-Fi connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re staying at home, you may be lucky enough not to have to worry about rent, food or data, but may need to pay for transport to and from campus.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a choice that television and radio personality Carissa Cupido faced.<\/p>\n<p>Her dream university was Rhodes, but because she could not afford the tuition and student accommodation, she chose UCT so she could stay at home and save on some costs.<\/p>\n<p>According to Carissa, even if you save on accommodation you will always have to pay for books, other course material, stationery and possibly a laptop or other electronic device.<\/p>\n<p>Most reputable institutions will provide information on what you\u2019ll need, where to get it and what it will cost.<\/p>\n<p>If you can, it\u2019s also worth speaking to students or lecturers to check this information and find out if you can buy second-hand books or other equipment you\u2019ll need.<\/p>\n<p>Carissa was able to save money by downloading textbooks that were available online or finding second-hand copies.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\">ALSO READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/194535\/back-to-school-hacks-that-will-save-you-money\/\" target=\"_blank\">Back-to-school hacks that will save you money<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Her other tips for managing your finances while you\u2019re studying are:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Get a part-time job. Ideally, look for options that fit your studies, such as tutoring schoolchildren or your fellow students.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Keep an eye out for student discounts. Many shops have student specials and discount days. Take advantage of these whenever you can.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Work out a budget and stick to it. Ask someone with experience to help figure out a weekly or monthly budget and then make sure you stay within it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Are you getting value for money?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more to tertiary institutions than just academic life, particularly if you\u2019re planning to spend three or more years of your life earning a qualification.<\/p>\n<p>If you can, visit the campus beforehand to get a feel for it and to check out the facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Ask about student support, such as tutoring, guidance or career counselling.<\/p>\n<p>You won\u2019t spend all your time studying, so also consider what non-academic activities and facilities are provided.<\/p>\n<p>Find out what sports are offered and whether there are other clubs and societies that interest you.<\/p>\n<p
