world free of women and child abuse starts with us\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ekurhuleni Clinical Forensic Medical Services (Bertha Gxowa Care Centre), rallied in the streets of Germiston against gender-based violence on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The air in the Germiston CBD was flooded with women\u2019s voices chanting freedom songs accompanied by loud sirens from emergency services vehicles demanding the attention of motorists and pedestrians alike.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The marched was themed \u201cA world free of women and child abuse starts with us\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_192811\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-192811\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption Children campaign.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Each year, starting from November 25 to December 10, this worldwide campaign raises awareness about the ill-treatment of women and children and the surge of gender-based violence.<\/p>\n<p>A number of men joined the women and marched with placards in hand, urging the community to speak up and help eradicate the abuse of women and children.<\/p>\n<p>Paula Phoshoko from Bertha Gxowa Care Centre was the voice of the march.<\/p>\n<p>She used a megaphone to loud-hail messages of encouragement to those who had suffered from any kind of violence and she chastised those who inflicted violence on others.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_192813\" around mental health illnesses<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe care centre is tired of servicing an influx of patients who have been raped, beaten and assaulted, which is why this campaign is important to us,\u201d said Paula.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is hard to keep hope alive when you examine rape victims daily, it makes you question the type of world are we living in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we urge all community members to be whistle blowers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you claim to love your partner why do you choose to abuse them?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you love your sister why do you rape her,\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>The march which commenced at the hospital\u2019s main gate made its first stop at the SPAR on Webber Road.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_192812\" children.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Marchers gained attention and attracted a few locals who joined in helping drive the message to stop the abuse of women and children into the city.<\/p>\n<p>The second stop was at Germiston Main Taxi Rank where commuters and taxi officials welcomed presentations from 24 organisations, including the metro, on women and child abuse.<\/p>\n<p>A representative from the Greater Germiston Taxi Association was also given an opportunity to talk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen have the right to prevent unwanted pregnancies, STIs and HIV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember to prioritise your life, the scars will disappear but the pain can stick with you for life, seek medical attention and report abusers,\u201d Paula added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_192807\" stand against the abuse of women and children last Wednesday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center\">ALSO READ: <a group descended on Golden Walk Shopping Centre, Entrance Five, for their third stop which was filled with young people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubstances such as alcohol play a role in destroying people\u2019s lives and lately we find that children do not adhere to the laws of alcohol consumption and they also do not know the dangers of overindulging,\u201d said Paula as she addressed the youth.<\/p>\n<p>Pamphlets from different departments relating to the campaign, reporting crime and those relating to mental health were distributed throughout the march.<\/p>\n<div hospital beds occupied by women and children suffering at the hands of men who should be protecting them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>One of the leading collaborators in the march was the Germiston SAPS Victim Empowerment Centre which hosted all participants at their final stop.<\/p>\n<p>Lunch was served at the centre and no injuries were reported during the march.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1'
