new eco-friendly shopping bags to help fight pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SPAR gave the fight against pollution the green light last Friday by launching a new range of eco-friendly shopping bags that would make Mother Nature proud.<\/p>\n<p>This initiative is aptly called #RethinkTheBag.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The retail giant introduced a brown shopping bag, a woven bag and a larger bag called a taxi shopping bag while addressing members of the media at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park.<\/p>\n<p>SPAR has also made changes to its plastic bag, which now contains eight per cent calcium.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_189198\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-189198\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"caption-attachment-189198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new eco-friendly shopping bag launched by SPAR.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This means it takes less energy to make, which minimises its carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven when disposed of properly, plastic bags can take up to 400 to a 1 000 years to decompose,\u201d said South Rand divisional marketing director Martin Webber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to encourage our shoppers to buy the SPAR alternative bags, which are biodegradable, recyclable and reusable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spar director of SPAR Lowveld, SPAR\u2019s large presence in South Africa creates the perfect platform to raise awareness about plastic pollution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can make a meaningful difference in our communities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For now, these communities include the South Rand, North Rand and the Lowveld, where the initiative will first take flight.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p Zweers said.<\/p>\n<p>By looking out for these eco-friendly bags, local shoppers can already start to do their bit.<\/p>\n<p>As author of<em> Going Green<\/em>, Simon Gear said to the crowd, \u201cIt
