am more than just my skin\u2019 \u2013 break the stereotype on albinism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thabelo Makgashana was barely seven years old when he realised he was different and started isolating himself.<\/p>\n<p>He did this because his peers in primary school called him names and others feared him because of misconceptions about his condition \u2013 albinism.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Thabelo, now 26, is an HIV\/Aids peer educator at the Tembisa Healthcare Centre and no longer lives in isolation but lives comfortably in his own skin after accepting that he is more than just his skin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up was quite a challenge because people fear what they don\u2019t understand, but the moment I accepted my difference people warmed up to me and that was an opportunity to show them that the only difference between them and me was the colour of my skin,\u201d Thabelo said.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>September is commemorated as Albinism Awareness Month.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_187283\" educating people about HIV\/Aids awareness and prevention.<\/p>\n<p>Interacting with people requires confidence, which is a characteristic he has built through the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents play a huge role in helping one gain confidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell your children what to expect from the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplain to them why they look different and go through the journey with them on how to accept and take care of themselves,\u201d Thabelo advised parents raising children with albinism.<\/p>\n<p>Albinism is an inherited genetic condition in which the body does not produce enough melanin, the chemical that is responsible for eye, skin and hair colour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">ALSO READ:<\/span><\/p>\n<p role in boosting one\u2019s self-confidence, organisations such as Bob90 and the Bino\u2019s from Ekurhuleni offers support to people with albinism by boosting their confidence and unleashing their talents through the performing arts.<\/p>\n<p>Bob90 and the Bino\u2019s use edutainment in the form of a choir and theatrical performances to highlight the increasing scourge of attacks, and the
