The Germiston SPCA has 12 staff members who are dedicated to the animals of the city.

They spend long hours saving animals from dire situations, feeding them, caring for them and helping them get adopted into loving homes.

The first SPCA in South Africa was started approximately 125 years ago, and today there are over 90 branches throughout South Africa, ranging from very small, to very large.

Nkosingiphiwe Sibiya is a receptionist. He started in April this year and wanted to work at the SPCA as he loves animals. His job entails taking calls, helping people with applications for adoption, helping with the admission forms for animals and other paperwork. He wants to be an inspector one day.

The 90 member SPCAs in South Africa are governed by the SPCA Act 169 of 1993, which is administered by the NSPCA (National Council of SPCAs), thus constituting the SPCA as a statutory body.

The NSPCA was founded in 1955, as the Federation of SPCAs, to provide a forum to bring uniformity to welfare legislation and standards.

This means each SPCA operates according to a set of standard regulations against which their performance and your expectations can be measured.

Staff at the Germiston SPCA work hard to serve animals in their jurisdiction.

Money is tight and it doesn’t allow for staff members to have new uniforms very often.

They are all desperately in need of new uniforms.

Taryn Bannister is a trainee inspector. She joined the team in January last year as she decided she wanted to start living her passion, which is helping animals. She has worked at a number of animal rescue centres and her work at the SPCA entails inspections, animal cruelty investigations and cases, and catching snakes in the area.

To this end, the SPCA committee has launched a uniform donation drive to try and raise money to purchase new uniforms for all the staff members.

Approximately R20 000 is needed to give them each a jersey, shirt, cap, jacket and pair of pants.

The staff members would be extremely grateful for any help they receive.
