{"id":184698,"date":"2018-08-14T08:00:57","date_gmt":"2018-08-14T06:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/?p=184698"},"modified":"2018-08-14T08:00:57","modified_gmt":"2018-08-14T06:00:57","slug":"register-save-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/lifestyle-news\/2018\/08\/14\/register-save-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"Register and save lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By registering as a donor, during Organ Donor Month (August), you can make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha Nicholls, executive director for the Organ Donor Foundation, said that in South Africa there are 4 300 people waiting for organ and tissue transplants.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cSadly less than 600 of them will receive a second chance, but by registering and expressing your wish to be a donor you can help save lives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the utmost respect is taken when recovering the organs and tissue to ensure that the donor\u2019s body is not disfigured.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBone tissue transplants are the second most common transplants performed on patients, second only to blood transfusions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of patients receive allograft tissue every year, most of which comes from non-living donors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to become a donor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any person who is in good health and does not have a chronic disease that could affect the recipient may become a possible donor.<\/p>\n<p>To register as a donor, log onto <a href=\"http:\/\/www.odf.org.za\">www.odf.org.za<\/a> and follow the prompts. You can also contact the call centre on 0800 22 66 11.<\/p>\n<p>You will receive an organ donor card and stickers for your ID book and drivers\u2019 licence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can also decide which organs you would like to donate, this should be discussed with your family,\u201d said Nicholls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two independent doctors will assess the donor to confirm brain death by running a series of tests. Once this is done the family gives the final consent and the tests are done to see which organs and\/or tissue can be used for transplantation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe waiting list is checked for a match in that specific region. There is specific criteria for matching a donor to a recipient, such as blood and tissue type match.
