says no to violence against women and children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Harcourts Real Estate staff from franchises all over Gauteng got together at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens recently for the annual Walk a Mile in Their Shoes march.<\/p>\n<p>They marched one mile in an effort to raise funds and create awareness around the issue of violence against women and children.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Simon Smith, who is the business owner of Harcourts in Germiston and Boksburg, said that the idea for the event originated from colleagues in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the massive problem we have with violence in our communities, we decided to adopt the idea and have our own event in South Africa,\u201d said Simon.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_184084\" march.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe event takes the form of a protest march in which all the male staff are required to don high heel shoes and walk one mile, side by side, with our female colleagues as a show of solidarity with the victims of violent crimes in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout 100 Harcourts staff members battled through the bitterly cold day, and we were even faced with a few drops of rain and of course those dreaded blisters the men had to contend with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event was a massive success and created lots of awareness about the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the fund-raising efforts of all the Harcourts staff in the region, we were able to raise<\/p>\n<p>R166 000 which was donated to iDuc,\u201d said victims<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>iDuc is a non-profit organisation based in Potchefstroom, but it works nationally in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation creates awareness and gives support to abused women and children in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Smith said that he was very proud of everyone at Harcourts who were living the values of the company by putting people first and doing the right thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we took a stance and made a statement that violence in any form, but particularly against women and children, is not acceptable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p
