Young and old from far and wide flocked to the Germiston City Sports Club last weekend to take in the sights and sounds of the Classic Motorcycle Club\u2019s (CMC) annual 1 000 Bike Show.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very pleased with the support the show received from thousands of visitors and we once again had a high standard of motorcycles on display, as well as a wide range of stalls,\u201d said Rusty Thorns, CMC chairperson.<\/p>

The yearly attraction, that has grown from humble beginnings as a small display in the Carlton Centre\u2019s Centre Court in 1985, to what is now the largest dedicated motorcycle show in Africa, boasted a varied mix of classic and modern motorcycles.<\/p>\n

This along with good weather and a convivial atmosphere proved a successful recipe for the show.<\/p>

As has become the norm at the show, which is a hit with bike enthusiasts, there were a number of unusual machines on display.<\/p>\n

One that attracted plenty of attention was Alan Heynes\u2019 1916 Autoped, which was made in New York and is claimed to be the world\u2019s first scooter, with the rider standing upright as the powered front wheel hauled this unusual two-wheeler along the road.<\/p>\n

It certainly turned heads as it was ridden up and down the display tent during demonstration rides.<\/p>\n

Another unusual bike on display was a bicycle powered by a 50cc Zundapp engine – an original moped dating back to 1956.<\/p>\n

The machine is owned by Maynard Marshall and requires some work to get it running.<\/p>\n

Various awards were handed out over the two-day event and the judges had a tough time deciding on the various category winners and runners-up as the standard of presentation and workmanship was extremely high.<\/p>\n

In the end, Neville Nicolau\u2019s 1976 BMW 90S was named the Best Motorcycle on Show among the classics.<\/p>\n

Neville explained that he bought the motorcycle three years ago and then rebuilt it completely.<\/p>\n

He also won the class for Japanese motorcycles over 250cc with his immaculate Suzuki GT750, a water-cooled three-cylinder two-stroke dating back to the 1970s.<\/p>\n

Brett Allan\u2019s Yamaha XS650 Chopper took the Best on Show honours in the Custom Motorcycle Category.<\/p>\n
