{"id":168889,"date":"2017-12-24T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2017-12-24T04:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/168889\/safety-tips-when-swimming-in-the-sea-3\/"},"modified":"2017-12-25T06:24:51","modified_gmt":"2017-12-25T04:24:51","slug":"safety-tips-when-swimming-in-the-sea-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2017\/12\/24\/safety-tips-when-swimming-in-the-sea-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Safety tips when swimming in the sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many community members will be heading to the coast for a well-deserved summer holiday soon.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things to remember when heading for a swim in the sea or a day at the beach:<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u2022 Always swim or surf at a beach patrolled by surf lifesavers or lifeguards.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Swim between the red and yellow flags as these mark the safest areas to swim.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u2022 Avoid swimming alone or unsupervised.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Float with a rip current. Do not swim against it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If you get into difficulty\/trouble, stay calm, float and raise one arm until help arrives.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Don&#8217;t run and dive into the water, even if you checked for hazards earlier as conditions can change.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Don&#8217;t swim directly after a meal.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Don&#8217;t swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If you are unsure of the conditions, ask a surf lifesaver or lifeguard.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Read the signs.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If a beach is closed don&#8217;t swim there.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Use 30+ sunscreen, wear a shirt and a wide-brimmed hat and remember to reapply sunscreen after swimming.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Take only aluminium cans to the beach.<\/p>\n<p>They are less dangerous than glass bottles and can
