The country was alive with Youth Day celebrations on Friday, including the Dinwiddie Family Fun Run.

The run, organised by the Dinwiddie Seventh Day Adventist Church, saw community members come out in numbers to celebrate Youth Day the healthy way.

The event included a 5km walk and 10km and 15km runs.

Ashley Martins took first place in the 5km walk.

“It was a nice walk and I am humbled by the experience,” said Martins.

Paul Dube won the 10km run.

“I am happy for the win but it was not an easy one as I am not as fit as I want to be,” said Dube.

Xolani Ngubane finished shortly after Dube, claiming the number one spot in the 15km run.

“I enjoyed the run, it was fun and I would definitely do it again,” said Ngubane.

Webster Dlamini, an elder at the church, was also pleased with the turnout at the event.

“This was our first time hosting an event of this nature and it ran smoothly,” said Dlamini.

“We had close to 200 entries and we achieved our goal of getting the community involved and united.

“We are looking at making it an annual event.”

Dlamini also thanked the local CPF for their assistance.

“Thank you to the Din-Al-View CPF for assisting us with marshalling the race, among other things,” said Dlamini.

“We also thank our event sponsors: Albemarle Spar, Chantell Optometrist, Minuteman Press Germiston, Roxanna Fruit Market, Pick n Pay Lambton and Merv’s Hardware.

“Another big thank you goes to the Dinwiddie community for supporting the event and making it a success.”

Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer was also among those showing support and cheering on the participants.

“There are three things that I would like the youth to keep in mind on June 16 and every other day,” said de Beer.

“They must always know that education is important, they need to take care of their health and be an active part of the community.

“They can help build South Africa for the better.

“In all things, they have to also keep following their dreams and never give up hope.”
