{"id":149065,"date":"2017-04-17T15:35:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-17T13:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/149065\/going-the-extra-mile-for-charity\/"},"modified":"2017-04-17T20:22:20","modified_gmt":"2017-04-17T18:22:20","slug":"going-the-extra-mile-for-charity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/sports-news\/2017\/04\/17\/going-the-extra-mile-for-charity\/","title":{"rendered":"Going the extra mile for charity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over 1 000 athletes and runners gathered at the Germiston Stadium for this year\u2019s instalment of the Alan Robb Race, last Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The annual event is held by Germiston Callies Harriers in honour of Alan Robb, who won four Comrades Marathons in Callies\u2019 colours.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The event includes a 15km and 32km race.<\/p>\n<p>A 5km fun run was also held to raise funds for Care Bear Gauteng Safe House for Abandoned and Abused Babies and Toddlers, in Elsburg, which offers a place of safety to abused, orphaned and neglected children in Germiston.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alan Robb race 2017\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nfn2XKT2aWM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Among those taking part in the fun run were representatives of Heavenly Flowers Private School\u2019s Lambton branch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was delightful and we loved it,\u201d said the owner of Heavenly Flowers, Heidi Searle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a great teambuilding activity and we did it as a team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New club member of Callies, Iselle Combrink-Groome, took part in the 15km race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an awesome and enjoyable race; well marked and marshalled,\u201d said Combrink-Groome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were enough water points and it was nostalgic to end at the Germiston Stadium because I believe most of us have childhood memories of athletics events at the stadium.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Athletes enjoy Alan Robb race\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8rE3mrKg6fk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another 15km finisher was Amelda Holt, from Benoni.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a good race, I enjoyed it and look forward to taking part in the race for years to come,\u201d said Holt.<\/p>\n<p>Callies\u2019 president Brian Machill was happy with how the race unfolded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe event went well; we are happy with the field who participated,\u201d said Machill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were no accidents reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe race saw an estimated 1 800 entries and we appreciate the support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was an emotional moment for representatives of Care Bear Gauteng when they were told that R7 700 was raised for the home on the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis just shows that South Africans can stand together, which is great,\u201d said Care Bear Gauteng\u2019s Lesley Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are willing to help and support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The director at Care Bear Gauteng, Annelie Johnson, agreed with Lesley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of good we can do when we stand together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Zenobia Venter, the house mother at Care Bear Gauteng, was lost for words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is for the children. I am humbled by all of this,\u201d said Venter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea how much this will help the children.
