Water is a precious resource and all residents of Germiston and the country have been urged to save as much as possible.<\/p>\n
Thanks to a brilliant idea, Francois Claassens of Murmel Street, Klopper Park, has been doing just that.<\/p>
\u201cLast year I received a municipal account of 55 000 litres, where we normally use about 25 000 litres,\u201d Francois said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo in December I decided it was time to make a plan.\u201d<\/p>
Francois bought tanks, piping and an automatic electric pump and now he has an excellent rainwater collection system going.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are using the water for all our household use, from doing the washing and the dishes to bathing, gardening and washing cars.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe only thing we don\u2019t use it for is drinking,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Francois has his system set up so he can interchange easily between the rainwater and municipal water.<\/p>\n
From December 3 to January 17, Francois, his wife Tersia and the three other people who live on the property, his mom-in-law Alet Rautenbach and tenants Belinda and Dean Labuschagne, used only rainwater.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy municipal account has dropped incredibly and now on my last account, the metro actually owed me money,\u201d Francois said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can do a lot with rainwater.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo only am I saving water but I\u2019m saving money as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
His system comprises two 10 000 litre tanks, piping and a 1.1 kilo watt electric pump which has an automatic on\/off capability.<\/p>\n
He thanks Powder Rite for the correct equipment and Andr\u00e9 Kruger for help with the installation.<\/p>\n
\u201cRecently there was a water outage for a day or two in our area, and we didn\u2019t even notice it,\u201d said Francois.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis system has really helped us do our bit to save water.\u201d<\/p>\n
