Rather, he says, join a group of people who can look out for your safety and also offer encouragement along the way when the muscles get too sore.

Follow these safety tips:

Make sure your cellphone is properly charged so that you are able to call for help in case of an emergency.

Don’t use the same training route every day. Varying the route makes it difficult for any would-be criminal to anticipate your movements, while the change in scenery can also make the physical exertion more bearable for you.

Leave the headphones at home. It is better to remain aware of your surroundings at all times so that you can hear any oncoming vehicles or other potential risks to your safety.

Take along enough money to be able to catch a bus or a taxi or even make a phone call from a payphone, if need be.

If you have an alarm system at home, remember to activate it before leaving for your training ride or run.

Lock all the doors and gates, so that your loved ones can be safe while they wait for your return.

“Cycling groups such as the Pedal Power Association have put together very important safe cycling tips. “Take a look at their website www.pedalpower.org.za for advice,” said Kotze.

Other articles you may be interested in:

Make sure your children are back to school safety savvy

Children must be alert when walking to and from school

[11,3
2650,2576,979,969,2734,2345,1392,3036,1119
post-145620","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-sports","category-sports-news","tag-adt","tag-cycling","tag-germiston","tag-germiston-city-news","tag-melissa-hart","tag-running","tag-safety","tag-safety-tips","tag-sport-2
["adt","cycling","germiston","germiston city news","melissa hart","running","safety","safety tips","sport
["GET
