{"id":142206,"date":"2017-01-13T08:21:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-13T06:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/142206\/juicy-tidbits-friday-the-13th\/"},"modified":"2017-01-13T09:20:52","modified_gmt":"2017-01-13T07:20:52","slug":"juicy-tidbits-friday-the-13th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/opinion-edition\/2017\/01\/13\/juicy-tidbits-friday-the-13th\/","title":{"rendered":"Juicy tidbits \u2013 Friday the 13th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition.<\/p>\n<p>Very little is known about the origins of the day\u2019s notoriety, but still many fear the day and the &#8216;bad luck&#8217; it brings.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Some historians believe that the superstitions surrounding the day, began in the late 19th century -with the first documented mention of the day being found in a biography of Italian composer ,Gioachino Rossini, who died on a Friday the 13th.<\/p>\n<p>Friggatriskaidekaphobia is the scientific name for the fear of the day.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>However, Friday the 13th is not universally seen as a day of misery.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in Italy, Friday the 17th and not Friday the 13th is considered to be a day that brings bad luck, while the number 13 is thought to be a lucky number.<\/p>\n<p>In many Spanish speaking countries and in Greece, Tuesday the 13th and not Friday the 13th, is seen as a day of bad luck and misfortune.<\/p>\n<p>I posed the question: \u201cDo you believe that the day is bad luck, or is this just a silly superstition?\u201d and here were some of the answers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Danny Mchunu said: \u201cI honestly believe it\u2019s a load of rubbish. I believe you make your own luck; it\u2019s a frame of mind. If you believe bad things happen on this day, then they probably will because you&#8217;re looking for them. The mind attracts what you think.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Jade Wiehahn said: \u201cI don\u2019t believe in any superstitions.
