{"id":141947,"date":"2017-01-12T12:40:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-12T10:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/141947\/dems-warns-communities-to-be-on-high-alert-when-it-rains\/"},"modified":"2017-01-13T07:26:48","modified_gmt":"2017-01-13T05:26:48","slug":"dems-warns-communities-to-be-on-high-alert-when-it-rains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2017\/01\/12\/dems-warns-communities-to-be-on-high-alert-when-it-rains\/","title":{"rendered":"DEMS warns communities to be on high alert when it rains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the recent heavy rain downpours across the metro, Ekurhuleni\u2019s Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS) warns residents, industrial and business communities to be extra alert for potential flooding.<\/p>\n<p>Those in flood prone areas are advised to be on high alert.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cFlooding occurs when water overflows its normal channels, such as streams and storm water drain systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt occurs also when there is a prolonged period of rain, with continuous heavy falls &#8211; or in the form of flash floods, which are usually associated with severe thunderstorms,\u201d said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for the metro.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHeavy rain may also result in rivers, canals, open trenches and furrows flooding, causing damage to low lying bridges and downstream areas; that may receive no rainfall at all during the flooding event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DEMS in collaboration with the South African Weather Service (SAWS), cautions people to stay indoors and off the roads, in heavy rain.<\/p>\n<p>If you are on the roads, avoid crossing low lying bridges and swollen streams, where the water is above ankle level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBaptism in rivers and streams spells danger in such weather, as water levels are high and should be avoided,\u201d Ntladi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSwitch off the electricity, at the supply point to the building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn rural areas, protect\/relocate animals to a safe place on higher ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbandon your home immediately if evacuation is recommended, before access is cut off by flood water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever drive on a road covered by flood water.
