{"id":141786,"date":"2017-01-06T13:10:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-06T11:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/141786\/matrics-glad-its-over\/"},"modified":"2017-01-06T14:43:11","modified_gmt":"2017-01-06T12:43:11","slug":"matrics-glad-its-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2017\/01\/06\/matrics-glad-its-over\/","title":{"rendered":"Matrics plan their futures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By: GCN editorial team<\/p>\n<p>Another school year past and another matric class eagerly awaited their National Senior Certificate examination results.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The long wait came to an end for the \u2018Class of 2016\u2019 on Thursday, with learners flocking to their respective high schools to receive their certificates.<\/p>\n<p>For the most part Germiston was full of smiles, as the youngsters compared results and chatted about their plans for the future.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The top performing school in the city was Ho\u00ebrskool Goudrif, which celebrated a 100 per cent pass rate.<\/p>\n<p>Principal Marius Mills told the GCN he was pleased and grateful that they&#8217;d received such good results.<\/p>\n<p>Goudrif&#8217;s \u2018Class of 2016\u2019 was made up of 104 matric learners, who achieved 21 distinctions between them.<\/p>\n<p>Mills said he was extremely pleased with the fact that 67.3 per cent of the learners attained university exemption, 30.7 per cent achieved diploma passes and 1.9 per cent got higher certificate passes.<\/p>\n<p>The school\u2019s top achievers were: Suzette Nel with four distinctions in English, Afrikaans, life orientation and life sciences; Zunika van Niekerk with three distinctions in Afrikaans, English and business studies; plus Charnelle Kruger with three distinctions in maths literacy, life orientation and tourism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m proud of the learners and very happy with the results,\u201d Mills said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141676\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141676\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/01\/01GCNSCHOOLSGOUDMH3_52324.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-141676\" src=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/01\/01GCNSCHOOLSGOUDMH3_52324-520x390.jpg\" alt=\"Zunika van Niekerk was Ho\u00ebrskool Goudrif\u2019s second top achiever. She was congratulated by Ho\u00ebrskool Goudrif\u2019s principal, Marius Mills.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The next school in line was Primrose High School, with a pass rate of 97.6 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9 Grobler, principal of the school, was thrilled with the results.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 170 matrics sat their final examinations at the school, earning 64 distinctions between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m very proud of both the students and the teachers for all their hard work throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I always say: &#8216;Work hard and God will do the rest&#8217;,\u201d said Grobler.<\/p>\n<p>The school\u2019s top achieving students were: Liezel Sephesu, with five distinctions in mathematics, life orientations, computer applications technology, life sciences and physical sciences; Puseletso Methe, with three distinctions in Afrikaans, tourism and life orientation; Nokuthula Khwasha, with three distinctions in mathematics, life science and life orientation &#8211; and Bibi Ahmed-Ismail, with three distinctions in Afrikaans, mathematics literacy and life orientation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wish our learners all the best for the future,\u201d Grobler concluded proudly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141670\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141670\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/01\/01GCNSCHOOLSPRIM_38728.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-141670\" src=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/01\/01GCNSCHOOLSPRIM_38728-520x390.jpg\" alt=\"The National Senior Certificate (NSC) results for 2016 were released on Thursday and students across the country couldn\u2019t wait to get their results. Primrose High School matrics Kamogelo Meso (left), Ntombi Nhlapo, Sisipho Cata and Mercy Mncube were among the school\u2019s students who were thrilled to receive their results.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In third position was Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebrskool Germiston, with a 96 per cent pass rate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re satisfied with our pass rate and our learners performed much better than I expected,\u201d said the school\u2019s principal, Retha du Toit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood luck to this year\u2019s matriculants &#8211; if you work hard throughout the year, the results will prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There were 114 matriculants and the school recorded 29 distinctions in total, with John-Samuel Nortje as the top achieving learner.<\/p>\n<p>Nortje obtained six distinctions in English, life orientation, business studies, life sciences, mathematics and physical sciences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141699\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141699\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/01\/01GCNSCHOOLSAFRIPS3_61159.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-141699\" src=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/01\/01GCNSCHOOLSAFRIPS3_61159-520x390.jpg\" alt=\"Students were happy to see that the year\u2019s hard work paid off. Front: Daniel Dames, James Selby, Retha du Toit (principal), Retshepile Motloung and Lesego Morakile.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Germiston High School learners were among those, who were thrilled to receive their results.<\/p>\n<p>The school had a pass rate of 95.75 per cent and 52 distinctions.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy principal of the school, Ren\u00e9e Goosen, was pleased with all their 166 matriculants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re very happy with the pass rate and although some of the learners struggled during the year, they pulled through,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe matriculants performed better than expected &#8211; they overcame many obstacles and challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe staff also did tremendous work helping the learners; we have hard working staff members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The school\u2019s top achievers were Nhlurile Hlatshwayo and Mbalenhle Ndhlovu, who produced 10 distinctions between them.<\/p>\n<p>Hlatshwayo was overwhelmed with her six distinctions and said: \u201cI got distinctions for life orientation, Afrikaans, life sciences, mathematics, accounting and physical sciences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ndhlovu obtained four distinctions in accounting, business studies, economics and life orientation.<\/p>\n<p>Goosen added that the learners put in a lot of effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the learners had to push themselves to reach their potential; and between them they achieved 24 distinctions, 21 bachelors\u2019 degree passes, 21 diploma passes and three higher certificate passes.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy principal Titien Kyamba said: \u201cThe school is very happy with the results, even though our pass rate dropped by three per cent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to improving our results this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The principal of Dawnview High School, Moeketsie Kolokoto, is satisfied with his school\u2019s results.<\/p>\n<p>The school attained an 89 per cent pass rate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, I&#8217;m happy as there&#8217;s been an improvement compared to 2015,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dawnview had 123 matric pupils, who between them attained 15 distinctions.<\/p>\n<p>The results included 29 bachelors\u2019 degree passes;
