{"id":141471,"date":"2017-01-10T12:03:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T10:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/141471\/back-to-basics\/"},"modified":"2017-01-10T12:07:19","modified_gmt":"2017-01-10T10:07:19","slug":"back-to-basics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2017\/01\/10\/back-to-basics\/","title":{"rendered":"Back-to-basics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The festive season is done and dusted, but there are people who are preparing to go on holiday as they prefer going on holiday when it is less busy.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa has an excellent road network, flanked by spectacular scenery.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>This makes self-driven holidays a popular means of touring and exploring the country.<\/p>\n<p>We often take it for granted that we know all the rules of the road as regular drivers, but you might just have forgotten a few basic and standard rules.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Below are some tips and basic road rules to prepare you for your self-drive holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamental reminder:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>South Africans drive on the left side of the road.<\/li>\n<li>The legal driving age is 18.<\/li>\n<li>Keep safe following distances at all times.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t drink and drive.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid speeding on all roads.<\/li>\n<li>It is illegal to operate a mobile phone whilst driving.<\/li>\n<li>It is illegal to drive without a seat belt.<\/li>\n<li>Any valid driver\u2019s licence is accepted in South Africa, provided it bears the photograph and signature of the holder and is printed in English.<\/li>\n<li>Many of the national roads across South Africa are toll roads. Confirm the toll fees before you leave, and make sure that you have either a credit card or cash to pay. Toll fares for light passenger vehicles vary from R2.50 to R61 per toll plaza &#8211; you may pass through three or four of these before you reach your destination.<\/li>\n<li>Animals in rural areas. Roads running through the country\u2019s rural areas may not be fenced, and as a result livestock, dogs and wildlife can wander onto the road. These are particularly hazardous at night.
