{"id":137188,"date":"2016-11-02T14:40:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-02T12:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/137188\/how-to-survive-the-heat\/"},"modified":"2016-11-03T09:21:57","modified_gmt":"2016-11-03T07:21:57","slug":"how-to-survive-the-heat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2016\/11\/02\/how-to-survive-the-heat\/","title":{"rendered":"How to survive the heat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the temperature and the humidity are high at the same time or when the temperature exceeds a certain threshold, a person\u2019s ability to cool their body through sweating is reduced.<\/p>\n<p>In such instances, there is the threat of heat-related illnesses.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Children, the elderly, obese people and those who work outside have a high risk of developing heat-related illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>People taking certain medications or consuming alcohol are also at risk.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Even athletes who are in a healthy condition can succumb to heat-related illnesses if they ignore the early warning signs.<\/p>\n<p>Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) warns communities within Ekurhuleni and the country at large to take care of their health as temperatures have been extremely high in the past few days and more high temperatures due to El Ni\u00f1o weather patterns are expected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Follow these tips when you find yourself in extremely hot conditions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drink plenty of water, non-alcoholic or decaffeinated fluids often even if you don`t feel thirsty. If you are on a fluids-restrictive diet, consult a physician before increasing consumption of fluids.<\/li>\n<li>Rest and cool down in the shade during breaks.<\/li>\n<li>Lightweight, bright, loose-fitting clothes reflect heat and sunlight away and help prevent heat absorption.<\/li>\n<li>Take a cool bath or shower.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t take salt tablets unless specified by a physician.<\/li>\n<li>Spend more time in air-conditioned places.<\/li>\n<li>Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day, usually the early morning or the evening.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Heat cramps:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heat cramps may be the first sign of a heat-related illness and may lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Signs and symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Painful muscle cramps and spasms usually in the legs and abdomen.<\/li>\n<li>Heavy sweating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>First aid:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply firm pressure on the cramping muscles or gently massage to relieve spasms.<\/li>\n<li>Have sips of cool water.
