The expectation is that by 2018 green building will have risen to more than 60 percent.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<h2>Higher than the UK and Germany<\/h2>\n<p>The survey included countries such as the UK and Germany, as well as countries with emerging markets like India and Colombia. The average level of green construction across all 13 countries was 24 percent.<\/p>\n<h2>Why South Africans are going green<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/albertonrecord.stg.sites.caxton.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/09\/solar-power.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-82992\" src=\"http:\/\/albertonrecord.stg.sites.caxton.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/09\/solar-power-520x366.jpg\" alt=\"solar power\" width=\"520\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<h3>The environment and their pockets<\/h3>\n<p>Conventional buildings make a significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and can consume large volumes of water and electricity.<\/p>\n<p>South Africans feel it&#8217;s the right thing to do and are subsequently requesting that green elements be incorporated into the design or retrofitting of buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The experience of power outages, escalating electricity tariffs and water scarcity make green solutions such as solar power a practical solution for many <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/homes.germistoncitynews.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">South African property owners<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0Although greening a building can be expensive initially, the savings in future operational costs make the initial investment worthwhile.<\/p>\n<h3>Increased property value<\/h3>\n<p>Increased property value is another consideration driving the uptake of going green in South Africa. Green features can make a property vastly more attractive to buyers.
