is World Teachers\u2019 Day &#8212; What are your memories of your favourite teacher?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks World Teachers\u2019 Day and is the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO\/UNESCO <a href=\"http:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/images\/0016\/001604\/160495e.pdf\" target=\"_top\">Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is also the first world Teachers\u2019 Day (WTD) to be celebrated within the new Global Education 2030 Agenda adopted by the world community one year ago.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>This year\u2019s theme, \u201cValuing Teachers, Improving their Status\u201d, embodies the fundamental principles of the 50-year-old recommendation while shining a light on the need to support teachers as reflected in the agenda\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.unesco.org\/education2030-sdg4\" target=\"_top\">Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A specific education goal, SDG4, pledges to \u201cEnsure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all\u201d.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Teachers are not only pivotal to the right to education, they also play roles that they not even paid for.<a href=\"http:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2016\/10\/04\/world-teachers-day-20-extra-jobs-all-teachers-do-but-rarely-get-thanks-for-6171391\/#ixzz4MBhKxUW0\" target=\"_blank\"> There are at least \u00a020 extra jobs all teachers do but rarely get thanked for<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The roadmap for the new agenda, the <a href=\"http:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/images\/0024\/002456\/245656e.pdf\" target=\"_top\">Education 2030 Framework for Action<\/a>, highlights the fact that teachers are fundamental for equitable and quality education and, as such, must be \u201cadequately trained, recruited and remunerated, motivated and supported within well-resourced, efficient and effectively governed systems\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, in order to achieve this goal, it is necessary not only to substantially increase the supply of qualified teachers but to motivate them by valuing their work.<\/p>\n<p>By 2030, 3.2 million more teachers will be required to achieve universal primary education and 5.1 million more in order to achieve universal lower secondary education.<\/p>\n<p>UNESCO with the WTD convening agencies (ILO, UNICEF, UNDP, and EI) and the International Task Force on Teachers, dedicates this day to celebrating a unique intergovernmental commitment \u2013 the only international standard-setting instrument on teachers \u2013 and reaffirms its commitment to the value of the
