{"id":134637,"date":"2016-10-02T07:10:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-02T05:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/134637\/the-metro-and-mastercard-help-ratepayers-pay-their-bills-using-their-smartphones\/"},"modified":"2016-10-02T20:11:05","modified_gmt":"2016-10-02T18:11:05","slug":"the-metro-and-mastercard-help-ratepayers-pay-their-bills-using-their-smartphones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2016\/10\/02\/the-metro-and-mastercard-help-ratepayers-pay-their-bills-using-their-smartphones\/","title":{"rendered":"The metro and Mastercard help ratepayers pay their bills using their smartphones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 900 000 ratepayers in the metro can now pay their municipal bills online with their smartphones, using Masterpass, the global digital payment service from Mastercard.<\/p>\n<p>Announced on Wednesday ,at the Mastercard Innovation Forum 2016, in Budapest, Hungary, this collaboration signals an African first, with the South African municipality being the first to accept bill payments via this service.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>To pay with Masterpass, ratepayers simply visit the metro\u2019s e-Siyakhokha website, select the account they wish to pay, and choose Masterpass as the payment option.<\/p>\n<p>They scan the QR code displayed on screen using the Masterpass app on their smartphone and enter their ATM pin or one time pin to authorise payment.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Their account will be updated immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to launch Masterpass bill payments with the metro, making everyday payments simpler, faster and more convenient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow ratepayers no longer need to carry cash and stand in long queues at customer care centres, nor do they have the inconvenience of logging into internet banking each time they want to pay their municipal account,&#8221; said Mark Elliott, division president, Mastercard, South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the Masterpass payment capability on their phone, they can now simply \u2018scan to pay\u2019 their bill \u2013 all from the comfort their couch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Launched as part of the metro\u2019s digital strategy to empower its citizens through technology, e-Siyakhokha offers ratepayers a one-stop portal for interacting and transacting with the local government authority.<\/p>\n<p>They can check their balances, look up historical statements, lodge billing queries and pay their municipal accounts, including rates and taxes, electricity and traffic fines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to use the latest technologies to make it as easy as possible for residents to pay their municipal bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOffering a selection of seamless payment options that can be used across devices is an important part of achieving that goal,\u201d said Ramasela Ganda, chief financial officer for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMasterpass appeals as a payment option, as it is a versatile digital payment solution \u2013 ratepayers banking with any bank can download and use it, whether they have a debit card or a credit card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means people can pay conveniently and confidently wherever they are and at any time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also enables us to improve revenue collection and achieve efficiency &#8211; in turn, freeing up resources to improve service delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration between Mastercard and the metro addresses demand in the South African market for more choice and simplicity in how people make payments for bills, goods and services.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Mastercard Impact of Innovation Study, South African consumers are eager adopters of new technologies and payment innovations, with 73 per cent saying they are ready to pay with their mobile phones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world we live in is constantly evolving and the ways we pay our bills should keep pace to best fit our needs and lifestyles &#8211;
