World Alzheimer\u2019s Day was held on September 21 and it was a special day for residents at Prim Villa in Primrose Hill.<\/p>\n

The home\u2019s nursing staff prepared a special day to celebrate the residents and have fun.<\/p>

\u201cEvery year there is a new theme and this year the theme is \u2018Remember me\u2019,\u201d said the home\u2019s manager, Sharon Flint.<\/p>\n

As per the theme, family members, friends and staff wrote little notes and posted them on a whiteboard and the notes were read out to the residents gathered in the dining area.<\/p>

\u201cThe notes were read out to the residents,\u201d explained Flint.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything was based on the theme and relevant to their time.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur recreational therapist, Kate Hlati, put together a display and decorated it with items from the residents\u2019 pasts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The items included a typewriter, records, hats and an old sewing machine.<\/p>\n

Burgers and chips were on the menu for the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole day was about getting items from their past and reminding them of the special moments in their lives,\u201d said Flint.<\/p>\n

\u201cBurgers, chips and ice cream cones were part of the menu, these are foods that date back to their childhood years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prim Villa is home to 66 residents.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also want to create awareness because it is important for people to know about Alzheimer\u2019s and not be scared of it,\u201d said Jozelle Steenkamp, stakeholder and bequest officer at the Methodist Homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople also need to know that there are young people living with Alzheimer\u2019s, it is not only the elderly, it could happen to anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n
