He said that the illegal Pikitup strike would no longer be tolerated.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The City has a mandate to keep the streets clean and protect the health of residents against disease but the mayor said that the money that has been paid to contractors who have stepped in, is too much.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Pikitup?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Pikitup<\/a> Tau says hearings have started we can&#39;t preempt outcome of dismissals. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KayaNews?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@KayaNews<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2LwFA0RsS2\">pic.twitter.com\/2LwFA0RsS2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Khayelihle Rafiq Khumalo-James (@KhayaJames) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KhayaJames\/status\/714722470671028224?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 29, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Residents still have to pay for the services of Pikitup even though this has been the fourth strike since December. Some community entrepreneurs have taken it upon themselves to collect people\u2019s trash at a low cost. Neighbours can come together, create a small fund to pay someone with a truck who can collect the rubbish and dump it at any of the 12 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mywaste.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">waste management depots<\/a> strategically located throughout the city. Most schools and communities have depots where you can dispose of the trash.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Take trash to a landfill<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/Corbis-AAMK001362.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-101390\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/Corbis-AAMK001362.jpg\" alt=\"Fresh Kills Landfill\" width=\"640\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are four landfills around Johannesburg. The landfill is a popularly used method of waste disposal. If you take your trash to any of the landfills in Johannesburg, the waste is buried in the land and the process used also eliminates the odours and dangers of waste before it is placed into the ground. This is not the most responsible waste management system because of the numerous landfill gases and methane presence.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dump trash at incineration\/combustion centres<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/Corbis-42-63901054.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-101391\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/Corbis-42-63901054.jpg\" alt=\"Block of Acerra incinerator\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is one incineration or combustion disposal method\u00a0in Johannesburg. This method burns waste to convert it\u00a0into residue and gaseous products reducing the volume. Thermal treatment where solid waste materials are converted by\u00a0incinerators into heat, gas, steam and ash. Here are a <a href=\"http:\/\/gauteng-region.infoisinfo.co.za\/search\/waste\" target=\"_blank\">few places<\/a>\u00a0that manage waste in Gauteng.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00a0Recycle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/Corbis-42-18272216.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-101392\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/Corbis-42-18272216.jpg\" alt=\"Recycling Center With Bins for Different Materials\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Separating your trash into glass, metals, plastic and compost makes it easier to take to different recycling centres around Johannesburg. There a few recycling centres around Johannesburg but you have to pay for their services:<\/p>\n<p>Lonehill Kerbside Recycling Programme is a pilot project of the Lonehill community to recycle waste at source. Bring banks garden refuse sites are also used for the recycling of glass, paper, cans and plastic. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglassrecyclingcompany.co.za\/recycling-at-home-work-school\/find-a-glass-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\">Glass Recycling Company <\/a>also makes it easy for people to recycle their glass materials at their designated glass banks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecomonkey.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ecomonkey&#8217;s\u00a0<\/a>collection service operates in Johannesburg in the following suburbs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Douglasdale<\/li>\n<li>Lonehill<\/li>\n<li>Jukskei Park<\/li>\n<li>Magaliesig<\/li>\n<li>Dainfern<\/li>\n<li>Olivedale<\/li>\n<li>Sharonlea<\/li>\n<li>Jukskei Park<\/li>\n<li>Johannesburg North<\/li>\n<li>Northwold, Kya Sands<\/li>\n<li>Honeydew<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wasterecyclers.co.za\/\">Mama She\u2019s Waste Recyclers<\/a>\u00a0offer a kerbside collection service. You can create your own garden compost heap by collecting perishable items such as egg shells, fruit and vegetables. Buy a compost bin and place it in a good drainage spot and let the worms do all the work.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Take trash to buy-back centres<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/Corbis-42-18260830.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-101396\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/Corbis-42-18260830.jpg\" alt=\"Recycling Plastic\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At Buy-back centres, waste materials with an economic value are bought from the community and resold to markets outside for a small profit. To utilise these waste sorting facilities you would have to separate your recycled materials at home before dropping them off at a Buy-back centre or Pikitup garden sites.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.remade.co.za\/default.php?ipkCat=5&amp;sid=5\">Remade<\/a> is one of the companies operating in Johannesburg that caters to 1000 street hawkers who make a living through collecting recyclable material and selling it to the buy-back centres.
