{"id":133063,"date":"2016-09-13T13:45:47","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T11:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/?p=133063"},"modified":"2016-09-14T08:54:04","modified_gmt":"2016-09-14T06:54:04","slug":"four-paper-recycling-mistakes-that-office-environments-make","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2016\/09\/13\/four-paper-recycling-mistakes-that-office-environments-make\/","title":{"rendered":"Four paper recycling mistakes that office environments make"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Clean-Up SA and Recycle Week runs from September 12 to 17.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that only eight per cent of businesses recycle their used paper and board.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>And even the most well-intentioned recyclers make mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>Even the most paperless offices use paper &#8212; from the ultra-protective cardboard box for computer equipment to the box that the tea bags come in.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The Paper Recycling Association of South Africa (Prasa) outlines some of the more common recycling blunders with some helpful tips to make sure that paper and board get to where they need to be &#8212; <em>to recycling companies<\/em> <em>in a good, clean state so they can be reprocessed and made into new paper products<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Mistake 1:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Putting non-recyclable paper products into the recycling bin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even though they are made of paper, a number of items are not suitable for recycling due to contamination or elements such waxes, foils, laminates and glues, for example, dirty paper plates, cigarette butts, tissue and toilet paper, paper towels, sticky notes, carbon paper, foil-lined, wax-coated and laminated papers, cement and dog food bags.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How to fix this:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Educate your employees around what is recyclable and what is not.<\/li>\n<li>Use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recyclepaper.co.za\/fact-sheets\/\">printable material and posters available<\/a> on www.recyclepaper.co.za for office communal areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"376\"><strong>RECYCLABLE<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"192\"><strong>NOT RECYCLABLE<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"376\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Magazines and brochures, including glossy varieties<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Newspapers<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Office and shredded paper, envelopes<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cardboard boxes of any kind \u2013 dry food, cosmetic and medicine boxes; roll cores, packing cartons (flattened)<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Old telephone directories and books<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Envelopes<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Paper gift wrap<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Milk, beverage and food cartons (such as Tetra Pak and SIG Combibloc liquid packaging)<\/td>\n<td width=\"192\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wet or dirty paper and cardboard<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Used paper plates, disposable nappies, tissues and toilet paper<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wax-coated, foil-lined or laminated boxes<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cement and dog food bags<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Foil gift wrapping, carbon and laminated paper<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong><u>Mistake 2:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Food contamination<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When wet waste &#8211; food waste, cigarette butts and soiled take-away containers &#8211; ends up in the paper recycling bin, this contaminates the paper and reduces its value. Paper also starts to degrade and reduces the strength of the fibres.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How to fix this:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set-up a two-bin system \u2013 receptacles for paper recycling and bins for food, liquid and non-recyclable waste with clear and simple messaging and graphics.<\/li>\n<li>Remind employees around the importance of separation. And remind them often.<\/li>\n<li>Contact one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recyclepaper.co.za\/prasa-members\/\">Prasa\u2019s members<\/a> about paper recycling boxes: Mpact Recycling, Sappi ReFibre and Neopak Recycling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Mistake 3:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Making it difficult and time-consuming for employees to recycle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are all human. Nobody likes to walk too far to throw something away.<\/p>\n<p><em>A study around container proximity showed that only 28 per cent of paper was recycled where recycling containers were centrally located, but when recycling containers were placed in close proximity (on desks etc) to participants, 85 per cent to 94 per cent of all recyclable paper was recycled.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How to correct this:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure that each desk is equipped with a tray or office recycler solely for paper and board.<\/li>\n<li>Install paper recycling receptacles in key locations:\n<ul>\n<li>At each desk<\/li>\n<li>At each printing\/copying station<\/li>\n<li>In meeting and break rooms, and kitchen areas<\/li>\n<li>In reception<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>For every paper recycling bin, there should be a general waste bin alongside it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Mistake 4:<\/u><\/strong><strong> Not knowing what to do with your recyclables<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your office has collected all this paper that it doesn\u2019t know what to do with, and after a while, it all ends up in the general rubbish.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How to sort this out: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Involve cleaning teams in recycling initiatives.\n<ul>\n<li>If waste streams are mixed, the recyclable paper will be contaminated and become worthless \u2013 this renders the recycling programme fruitless.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Assign a sheltered area in which to keep recycled paper clean and dry.<\/li>\n<li>Where possible, keep office paper (mainly white bond paper) separate from newspapers and magazines and cardboard boxes.<\/li>\n<li>Partner with a recycling collection agent that meets your needs \u2013 this could be a service offered by a big company, a smaller business or an informal collector who can benefit from your paper collection.<\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mywaste.co.za\">mywaste.co.za<\/a> for collection programmes or buy-back centres in your area.<\/li>\n<li>Support a local school or charity\u2019s recycling fund-raising initiatives (e.g. the Ronnie Recycler programme) as your recyclable paper could boost the tonnages they collect and increase the funds raised.<\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recyclepaper.co.za\">recyclepaper.co.za<\/a> for a list of its members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other ways to boost your company\u2019s recycling efforts <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Appoint a recycling champion who is able to drive and monitor the programme.<\/li>\n<li>Regular communication is key \u2013 posters at all \u201cpoints of disposal\u201d, emails\/printed memos, newsletters, agenda item in meetings<\/li>\n<li>Showcase the successes and volumes of paper recycled to demonstrate the programme\u2019s effectiveness.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that cleaning teams are trained and incentivised to maintain the programme. Include and thank them in the communications.<\/li>\n<li>Paper collectors will only service offices where there is sufficient volume to warrant their transportation costs. It makes sense in a larger office park to centralise the collection area so that larger quantities are accumulated faster. Engage the facility manager in this case.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your visitors, customers and suppliers and clients are aware of your recycling efforts through regular communication and clear signage.<\/li>\n<li>Staff can also be encouraged to bring waste paper from home if the storage area is big enough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Know the benefits of recycling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every business likes to be better at reducing its environmental footprint. Knowing and sharing the benefits of your paper recycling efforts will help each person strive to do more.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Diversion of valuable raw material from landfill<\/strong> &#8211; A tonne of recycled paper can save up to three cubic metres of landfill space and is used to make new paper products that we use every day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cleaner air \u2013 <\/strong>Paper buried in a landfill after mixing with other waste will degrade and release gases such as methane, which is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Job creation<\/strong> \u2013 Big and small companies as well as informal collectors make money (and employ people) through the recovery and processing of clean, quality recyclable paper.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feel-good factor<\/strong> &#8211; Staff feel more environmentally aware and responsible.
