{"id":129354,"date":"2016-07-29T13:43:48","date_gmt":"2016-07-29T11:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/129354\/saps-ready-for-local-elections-zero-no-go-areas\/"},"modified":"2016-07-29T13:43:48","modified_gmt":"2016-07-29T11:43:48","slug":"saps-ready-for-local-elections-zero-no-go-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2016\/07\/29\/saps-ready-for-local-elections-zero-no-go-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"SAPS ready for local elections: Zero no-go areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saps.gov.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">South African Police Service<\/a> (SAPS) says it is committed to ensuring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanews.gov.za\/south-africa\/saps-ready-local-elections\" target=\"_blank\">peaceful local government elections <\/a>next week on 3 August.<\/p>\n<p>More than 50 000 police officers will be deployed at 22 612 voting stations countrywide as South Africans take to the polls in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elections.org.za\/content\/Elections\/2016-Municipal-Elections\/Home\/\" target=\"_blank\">2016 Local Government Elections<\/a>.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Police Minister Nathi Nhleko emphasised that there will be zero \u201cno-go areas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to secure the environment to such an extent that communities are able to exercise their constitutional right to vote,\u201d he said.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>As of June, the police had 1000 voting districts which were classified as high risk areas. This number has since been reduced to 650.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister said the overall success of the election requires all stakeholders in the country to play an active role in ensuring elections are peaceful, free and fair.<\/p>\n<p>Acting National Police Commissioner Kgomotso Phahlane said the success of the police is highly dependent on the collaboration between communities and visible policing.<\/p>\n<h3>Violence in Vuwani<\/h3>\n<p>Regarding the <a href=\"http:\/\/capricornreview.co.za\/90773\/vuwani-protests-22-schools-affected\/\" target=\"_blank\">violence in Vuwani<\/a>, in Limpopo, he assured the residents they will have a platform to vote which will be\u00a0secured by the police.<\/p>\n<p>He said one of the measures for the Limpopo area included that a number of the new cadets will be deployed in Vuwani.<\/p>\n<h3>Violent protests in Tshwane<\/h3>\n<p>Regarding the <a href=\"http:\/\/rekordeast.co.za\/97858\/violence-protests-erupt-in-parts-of-pretoria\/\" target=\"_blank\">violent protests<\/a> that broke out in Tshwane, which saw shops being looted and roads being barricaded, the Minister said:\u00a0\u201cWe can assure that it\u2019s not going to happen again.
