{"id":129226,"date":"2016-03-24T12:50:24","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T10:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/129226\/new-tb-drug-inaccessible-to-many-south-africans-72\/"},"modified":"2016-03-24T12:50:24","modified_gmt":"2016-03-24T10:50:24","slug":"new-tb-drug-inaccessible-to-many-south-africans-72","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2016\/03\/24\/new-tb-drug-inaccessible-to-many-south-africans-72\/","title":{"rendered":"New TB drug inaccessible to many South Africans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msf.org.za\/pushthelimits\/?gclid=Cj0KEQjwoM63BRDK_bf4_MeV3ZEBEiQAuQWqkRS2IRkGz4tCdvPyImX5uW1YnyshT_xUkg4kptDn_NgaAgOj8P8HAQ\" target=\"_blank\">Doctors Without Borders (MSF)<\/a>,\u00a0other treatment providers in South Africa and globally have found that the first new drugs in half a century to be developed for treating <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multi-drug-resistant_tuberculosis\" target=\"_blank\">drug-resistant tuberculosis<\/a> (DR-TB) are offering new hope to patients \u2014 but significant challenges remain to improve availability and affordability of these treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Current treatment regimens for DR-TB involve thousands of pills taken over two years, which can have devastating side effects and ultimately only work for 50% of people with multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB and 26% of people with extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Access to new drugs bedaquiline and delamanid along with \u2018repurposed\u2019 drugs \u2014 not specifically developed for TB but that have shown efficacy in treating TB \u2014 could be a significant step toward finding a shorter, more tolerable DR-TB regimen in the future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/IMG_1101-Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-101025\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/IMG_1101-Medium-520x400.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1101 (Medium)\" width=\"520\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>This is good news for South Africa, which has one of the highest burdens of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) in the world, with 30,000 new cases each year, over 18,000 people diagnosed and over 11,500 put on treatment in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Only 3,000 patients worldwide have been treated with bedaquiline, and fewer than 200 with delamanid &#8211; only 2% of the 150,000 people around the world that could benefit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMSF is treating some of the lucky few people in South Africa \u2014 and in fact the whole world \u2013 to receive access to strengthened treatment regimens including bedaquiline and delamanid,\u201d said Dr. Jennifer Hughes of MSF in South Africa. \u201cSouth Africa\u2019s Department of Health has been a leader in accessing new DR-TB drugs, with over 1,750 patients receiving bedaquiline nationally since 2013.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_101026\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101026\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/StopTB-Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-101026\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/StopTB-Medium-520x400.jpg\" alt=\"Ubuntu clinic (integrated TB\/HIV) in Khayelitsha.\" width=\"520\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-101026\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ubuntu clinic (integrated TB\/HIV) in Khayelitsha.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Patients receiving bedaquiline in South Africa had 77% \u2018culture conversion\u2019 rates from TB-positive to negative, which is a promising sign that their treatment may ultimately be successful. Additional information from South Africa showed similar safety and efficacy even when bedaquiline was given together with antiretroviral therapy (ART) to TB\/HIV co-infected people, another sign that this drug has the potential to transform DR-TB treatment in coming years.<\/p>\n<p>Delamanid, however, is not yet as widely available in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTB is curable, yet it is now the infectious disease that kills the most people in the world,\u201d said Dr. Grania Brigden, TB Advisor for the MSF Access Campaign. \u201cWe desperately need treatment that is easier for people to tolerate, that cures more people, and that is more available and affordable, otherwise it\u2019s just deadly business as usual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Article supplied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msf.org.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">Doctors Without Borders (MSF)<\/a>.
