Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) personnel rushed to the scene of a collision between a taxi and a light motor vehicle, on the N3 north bound, near the Geldenhuys interchange, yesterday (Monday).<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is believed that there was a high speed chase between the driver of the white Mercedes Benz and the police, whereby the sedan crashed into the back of the taxi full of passengers.<\/p>
\u201cThe taxi driver lost control of the vehicle and it rolled, landing on its roof,\u201d said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.<\/p>\n
\u201cFour taxi passengers were killed in the collision which happened at about 2pm.<\/p>
\u201cThe entire highway was brought to a standstill and traffic was affected late into the evening.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another taxi passenger was critically injured and airlifted to hospital from the scene.<\/p>\n
Eight others sustained serious but stable injuries and were transported to various hospitals within Ekurhuleni.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe occupants of the sedan apparently managed to run away from the scene after the crash.<\/p>\n
\u201cEMPD and SAPS members are currently investigating,\u201d said Ntladi.<\/p>\n
So far no comment has been received from the Germiston SAPS on the incident.<\/p>\n
