In March 1901 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herbert_Kitchener\" target=\"_blank\">Lord Kitchener<\/a>, the commander of the British forces, decided to cut off the Boers supply of food. He initiated the \u201cscorched earth\u201d policy because the Boers were being supported by farmers. About 30 000 Boer farmhouses were burnt down and more than 40 towns were down\u00a0and livestock was killed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_109214\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109214\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/05\/Botha_CMR_m_fix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-109214\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/05\/Botha_CMR_m_fix.jpg\" alt=\"Picture from Anglo Boer War Museum.\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-109214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Picture from Anglo Boer War Museum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Boer women, children and black people were put into separate concentration camps. Towards the end of the war approximately 116 000 boer women and children were housed in concentration camps, with camps housing approximately 115 000 black people. On 20 May 1902, 523 black people were recorded as dead in the concentration camps.
