Angola-based guerrillas of the Front for the National Liberation of Congo \u00a0(FLNC) took the border town of Dilolo, in the western Shaba region, en route to the mining centre of Kolwezi, where they instigated the attack. The war ended towards the end of May 1977. A year later, the FLNC captured the mining town in what became known as Shaba II.<\/p>\n<p>The Shaba wars took place\u00a0during Mobutu Sese Seko&#8217;s rule. The FLNC plans to seize Mobutu were thwarted twice as\u00a0he was rescued by French troops in both wars.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/05\/Flag_of_the_Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo.svg_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-108879\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/05\/Flag_of_the_Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo.svg_.png\" alt=\"Flag_of_the_Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo.svg\" width=\"460\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The country\u00a0was a one-party state and dictatorship, run by Mobutu Sese Seko and his ruling Popular Movement of the Revolution party.
