It was a special day at the Sunshine Centre Association Elsburg, last Saturday.<\/p>\n
The centre was celebrating its 40th birthday.<\/p>
Michael Ngobeni, the coordinator at the centre, said: \u201cFor an NGO to reach such a milestone is something special, we are obviously doing something right.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ngobeni added that they also wanted to use the celebration as a fund-raising event, but, due to the rainy weather, the plans fell flat.<\/p>
Parents, children, staff, volunteers and supporters were all invited to come along on the day to celebrate the centre\u2019s longevity.<\/p>\n
One of the centre\u2019s biggest supporters, R\u00f6hlig-Grindrod Logistics, had representatives at the event, as well as a representative from Kapele Freight and Logistics and volunteer at the centre, Princess Phiri.<\/p>\n
Phiri introduced R\u00f6hlig-Grindrod to the centre and now the company helps greatly by sponsoring groceries every three months.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis helps us immensely with our running costs,\u201d Ngobeni said.<\/p>\n
Representatives from Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebrskool Germiston and Colin Mann Primary School, as well as nurses and students nurses from the Elsburg Clinic, also attended the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe schools and the clinic give us a lot of support,\u201d Ngobeni said.<\/p>\n
The Sunshine Centre Association is a dynamic, progressive and innovative non-profit organisation in the field of intellectual disability, offering diverse services at many levels.<\/p>\n
All developments and services offered by the organisation are a direct response to the needs identified in the communities.<\/p>\n
The Sunshine Centre Association is committed to the development and inclusion of children with disabilities and delays \u2013 intellectual, developmental, and physical \u2013 in partnership with families and communities.<\/p>\n
The Elsburg centre acts as an early intervention centre, which offers specialised stimulation and early intervention programmes catering specifically to the needs of children with developmental delays and intellectual\/physical disabilities.<\/p>\n
Therapists in different disciplines visit the centre regularly and work with the children, teachers, assistants and volunteers, using a transdisciplinary approach.<\/p>\n
The children\u2019s school terms are similar to those of government schools and they have a regular school day.<\/p>\n
They do not live at the centre, but are transported to and from school each day.<\/p>\n
Ngobeni said he is proud of what the centre has accomplished over the past 40 years and is looking forward to many more years of aiding children in the community.<\/p>\n
