{"id":121264,"date":"2016-05-13T08:25:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-13T06:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/121264\/philani-gets-a-life-changing-gift\/"},"modified":"2016-05-13T15:16:37","modified_gmt":"2016-05-13T13:16:37","slug":"philani-gets-a-life-changing-gift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2016\/05\/13\/philani-gets-a-life-changing-gift\/","title":{"rendered":"Philani gets a life-changing gift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you were given the gift of sight after 10 years, what is the first movie you would choose to watch on the big screen?<\/p>\n<p>This is the question that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sterkinekor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ster-Kinekor<\/a> and its flagship CSI programme, Vision Mission, is asking South Africans, with the launch of a new and life-changing campaign called #OpenEyes. #OpenEyes is encouraging everyone to join in the conversation and suggest what movie they think Philani Twala should watch with his new eyes, and why<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>For the past 10 years, Vision Mission has been responsible for giving the gift of clear sight to thousands of underprivileged schoolchildren across the country through eye tests and the fitting of pairs of spectacles.<\/p>\n<p>This exciting new project has changed the life of a young man from Katlehong, forever.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The programme has assisted by performing a double corneal transplant operation on 20-year-old Philani.<\/p>\n<p>Philani, who until recently was almost blind, had the first corneal transplant operation a few months ago.<\/p>\n<p>With the assistance of #OpenEyes, he has recently undergone the second transplant operation on his other eye, under the expertise of Dr Akiel Asvat, a Johannesburg-based ophthalmologist who agreed to perform the operation on a pro-bono basis.<\/p>\n<p>Through #OpenEyes, Ster-Kinekor and Vision Mission have made it possible for Philani\u2019s life-changing operation to restore his sight.<\/p>\n<p>Following the recovery period after the second operation, Philani will soon experience a \u201cgreat moment\u201d with Ster-Kinekor, and all of South Africa is invited to make it even more memorable.<\/p>\n<p>Bradley Knowles, general manager: marketing of Ster-Kinekor Theatres, said: \u201cWe are asking South Africans to come on board with us and suggest what movie they think Philani should watch with his new eyes, as his first big-screen cinema experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur promise to our customers is a \u2018great moment at its greatest\u2019 and we certainly think this is going to be one of Philani\u2019s \u2018greatest moments\u2019 &#8211; with everyone\u2019s input, of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the operation and recovery process, Ster-Kinekor Vision Mission has been following and documenting Philani\u2019s incredible story &#8211; and the impact that the restoration of sight will have on this young life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough #OpenEyes, we will engage with the South African public to update them on his progress, as we ask them to share with us the title of their favourite blockbuster movie of all time, the one that they think Philani should watch with his new eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The #OpenEyes campaign has been designed to highlight and raise awareness on a national scale of Vision Mission\u2019s involvement in the plight of thousands of needy South Africans who require a corneal transplant, but who do not have the means.<\/p>\n<p>This campaign and the ongoing work that Vision Mission and its supportive partners continue to do in the field of assessing and improving the sight of young South Africans, is in the large made possible through the generosity of Ster-Kinekor\u2019s loyal customers.<\/p>\n<p>Its cinema audiences have accumulated more than R500 000 per year over the past 10 years.
