{"id":120989,"date":"2016-05-10T09:46:51","date_gmt":"2016-05-10T07:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/120989\/on-this-day-in-1915-anti-apartheid-activist-beyers-naude-was-born\/"},"modified":"2016-05-10T09:46:51","modified_gmt":"2016-05-10T07:46:51","slug":"on-this-day-in-1915-anti-apartheid-activist-beyers-naude-was-born","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/lifestyle-news\/entertainment-news\/2016\/05\/10\/on-this-day-in-1915-anti-apartheid-activist-beyers-naude-was-born\/","title":{"rendered":"On this day in 1915: Anti-apartheid activist Beyers Naude was born"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Dutch Reformed dominee, named after a Boer War general, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sahistory.org.za\/people\/reverend-beyers-naud%C3%A9\" target=\"_blank\">Beyers Naud\u00e9 <\/a>became what Nelson Mandela referred to as a \u201cliving spring of hope for racial reconciliation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>His father, Jozua Naud\u00e9, also a dominee, was a founding member of the Afrikaner Broederbond, a secret society aimed at promoting Afrikaner nationalism.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Naud\u00e9 obtained his theology degree at the University of Stellenbosch in 1939 and also completed a Master\u2019s degree in languages. He joined the Broederbond as its youngest member ever when he was only 25.<\/p>\n<h3>Sharpeville Massacre<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/05\/download.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-106553\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/05\/download-520x380.jpg\" alt=\"download\" width=\"520\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a><\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>For the next twenty years Naud\u00e9 ministered to various congregations across the country. He followed the political philosophy of the National Party, but the Sharpeville Massacre\u00a0in 1960 brought about a huge change of heart.<\/p>\n<p>Naud\u00e9 was serving as a dominee, in the elite Aasvo\u00eblkop congregation in Northcliff where he experienced intense inner conflict between the church&#8217;s support of apartheid and his own Christian principles. In 1963 he resigned from the Broederbond after 22 years of membership. His real turning point came on a Sunday morning in September 1963. Already considered a traitor for quitting the Broederbond, he braved complete rejection by the Afrikaner community by condemning apartheid from the pulpit.<\/p>\n<p>After completing his last sermon in which he placed \u201cthe authority of God before the authority of man\u201d\u009d, he removed his robes and left his church. Naud\u00e9 and his family were completely ostracized by their fellow Afrikaners.\u009d Naud\u00e9 was embraced by the Black community and joined a Dutch Reformed congregation led by Reverend Sam Guti in Alexandra.<\/p>\n<h3>Oom Bey and The Arch<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/05\/af55965e0bdd494481dfd70bc5edcfe8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-106554\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/05\/af55965e0bdd494481dfd70bc5edcfe8-520x400.jpg\" alt=\"af55965e0bdd494481dfd70bc5edcfe8\" width=\"520\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In October 1977, Naud\u00e9 and his Christian Institute were banned. He was not allowed to leave his house, or speak to more than one person at a time. He continued to speak to other anti-apartheid activists like Archbishop Desmond Tutu\u00a0on a one-on-one basis.<\/p>\n<p>Naud\u00e9&#8217;s banning order was lifted in September 1984. He immediately threw himself back into the struggle against apartheid. He succeeded Archbishop Tutu as the secretary-general of the South African Council of Churches in 1985. In 1987 he formed part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sahistory.org.za\/dated-event\/dr-federik-van-zyl-slabbert-leads-delegation-meet-anc\" target=\"_blank\">Afrikaner group<\/a> that met with ANC representatives in Senegal.<\/p>\n<p>In 2001 Naud\u00e9 was given the freedom of the city of Johannesburg and one of its busiest roads were named after him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"stream-item stream-item-below-post-content\">\n<div class='tenancy_slot tenancy_slot_1 jannah_ad' style='display: none;' data-query-id='8e6507a53726d33024c789ffd938716f'><\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Broederbond-dominee to anti-apartheid icon.
