The policy would be extended to Ford\u2019s office workers the following August.<\/p>\n<p>Henry Ford\u2019s Detroit-based automobile company had broken ground in its labour policies before. In early 1914, against a backdrop of widespread unemployment and increasing labour unrest, Ford announced that it would pay its male factory workers a minimum wage of $5 per eight-hour day, upped from a previous rate of $2.34 for nine hours. The policy was adopted for female workers in 1916. The news shocked many in the industry \u2013 at the time, $5 per day was nearly double what the average auto worker made \u2013 but turned out to be a stroke of brilliance, immediately boosting productivity and building a sense of company loyalty and pride among Ford\u2019s workers.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Manufacturers all over the country, and the world, soon followed Ford\u2019s lead, and the Monday-to-Friday workweek became standard practice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_105603\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105603\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/04\/Henry-ford-model-t.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-105603 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/04\/Henry-ford-model-t-520x400.jpg\" alt=\"Henry ford model t\" width=\"520\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-105603\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henry Ford with his Model T Ford in 1908. Over the next 19 years, Ford would build 15,000,000 automobiles with the Model &#8220;T&#8221; engine, the longest run of any single model apart from the Volkswagen Beetle.
