This was when he established a maritime replenishment station at the Cape of Good Hope for the Dutch East India Company (VOC).<\/p>\n<p>The main reason for building the castle was to provide protection for the new settlement. It was built in accordance with 17th century European principles of fortification, comprising five strong bastions that allowed the outside walls to be protected by cross-fire.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/letabaherald.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/113\/2016\/04\/Corbis-42-30090371.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-21307\" src=\"https:\/\/letabaherald.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/113\/2016\/04\/Corbis-42-30090371-520x400.jpg\" alt=\"Castle of Good Hope with Table Mountain in background, City Bowl, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa\" width=\"520\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Construction on the Castle of Good Hope was completed on the 26 April 1679. The five bastions were named after the main titles of William, Prince of Orange. The Western bastions was named Leerdam; followed in clockwise order by Buuren, Catzenellenbogen, Nassau and Orange.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>From 1678, the castle became a centre of civilian, administrative and military life at the Cape.
