{"id":118759,"date":"2016-04-19T09:11:54","date_gmt":"2016-04-19T07:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/118759\/on-this-day-in-history-pharmaceutical-companies-drop-a-lawsuit-against-sa\/"},"modified":"2016-04-19T09:11:54","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T07:11:54","slug":"on-this-day-in-history-pharmaceutical-companies-drop-a-lawsuit-against-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/lifestyle-news\/entertainment-news\/2016\/04\/19\/on-this-day-in-history-pharmaceutical-companies-drop-a-lawsuit-against-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"On this day in history: Pharmaceutical companies drop a lawsuit against SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1998, \u00a0Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America together with 39 international pharmaceutical companies brought a lawsuit against the South African government.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was for patent infringement regarding the manufacture of generic versions of life saving anti-AIDS drugs.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>South Africa has one of the world&#8217;s highest rates of HIV and AIDS and these companies demanded millions of dollars for the right to manufacture their drugs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/04\/Corbis-42-16081389.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-103985\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/04\/Corbis-42-16081389.jpg\" alt=\"Waiting for treatment at HIV clinic\" width=\"640\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a><\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>On 19 April 2001, these charges against\u00a0South Africa and other third world countries were dropped, which enabled them to produce generic versions of their patented drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the pharmaceutical companies did not stop there, some donated their drugs and others sold their drugs at cost price, following the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<div class='tie-fluid-width-video-wrapper tie-ignore-fitvid' style='margin-bottom: 30px;'>\n\t\t\t<iframe style='width: 100%;
