The French government planned an international exposition and announced a design competition for a monument to be built on the Champ-de-Mars in central Paris. Out of more than 100 designs submitted, the Centennial Committee chose Eiffel\u2019s plan of an open-lattice wrought-iron tower that would reach almost 1,000 feet above Paris and be the world\u2019s tallest man-made structure.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_101515\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101515\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/Corbis-BE040999.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101515\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/Corbis-BE040999.jpg\" alt=\"1887-1889, Paris, France. Image by \u00a9 Corbis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eiffel, a noted bridge builder, was a master of metal construction and designed the framework of the Statue of Liberty that had recently been erected in New York Harbour.<\/p>\n<p>The building was a site of contention and many criticised it as structurally unsound and others thought it was an eyesore in the heart of Paris.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Eiffel completed his great tower under budget in just two years with only one casualty.
