{"id":116335,"date":"2016-03-23T09:47:36","date_gmt":"2016-03-23T07:47:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/116335\/imperial-faberge-eggs-the-ultimate-easter-egg\/"},"modified":"2016-03-23T09:47:36","modified_gmt":"2016-03-23T07:47:36","slug":"imperial-faberge-eggs-the-ultimate-easter-egg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/lifestyle-news\/entertainment-news\/2016\/03\/23\/imperial-faberge-eggs-the-ultimate-easter-egg\/","title":{"rendered":"Imperial Faberg\u00e9 eggs &#8211; the ultimate Easter Egg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1827, an ambitious 24-year-old Russian took over his father\u2019s jewellery business, determined to make it the talk of imperial St Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen years later, having gained a reputation for his craftsmanship and creativity, Peter Carl Faberg\u00e9 received the ultimate seal of approval: a commission from Tsar Alexander III for a bejewelled Easter egg \u2013 a gift for his young bride, Maria Feodorovna.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The white enamel \u201chen\u201d egg, containing a gold yolk, gold hen, tiny replica of the imperial crown and ruby pendant, was a hit, and Faberg\u00e9 went on to create a new egg for the Tsar every Easter, as well as countless other pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Each egg took around a year to complete, contained a \u201csurprise\u201d and was designed in secret, with not even the Tsar privy to its design until it was hand-delivered by Faberg\u00e9.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>When Alexander died, his son, Tsar Nicholas II, continued the tradition, commissioning two eggs each Easter \u2013 one for his mother and one for his own Tsarina, Alexandra Feodorovna \u2013 bringing the total to 50.<\/p>\n<div class='tie-fluid-width-video-wrapper tie-ignore-fitvid' style='margin-bottom: 30px;'>\n\t\t\t<iframe style='width: 100%; min-height: 300px; aspect-ratio: 16\/9;' src='https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/7vssZ_5V_UU' loading='lazy'><\/iframe>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>In October 1917, the Bolsheviks seized power and the Tsar and his family fled to Ekaterinburg where they were executed by firing squad the following July.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_99744\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99744\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/1913a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-99744 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/albertonrecord.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2016\/03\/1913a-520x400.jpg\" alt=\"1913a\" width=\"520\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-99744\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Russian Imperial family.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2014, a scrap metal dealer bought an ornament at a junk auction which he intended to melt down for its gold.
