{"id":113314,"date":"2016-02-15T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-15T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/113314\/staying-safe-on-public-transport\/"},"modified":"2016-02-16T12:16:45","modified_gmt":"2016-02-16T10:16:45","slug":"staying-safe-on-public-transport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2016\/02\/15\/staying-safe-on-public-transport\/","title":{"rendered":"Staying safe on public transport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A large number of South Africans make use of public transport to get to and from their workplaces every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs with most aspects of life, there are basic tips and suggestions that commuters should keep in mind in order to not fall prey to criminals while they are travelling on public transport,\u201d said Theunis Kotze, ADT general manager, inland region.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The local security company has compiled a list of safety tips which will, hopefully, help to keep people safe during their daily commute:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Make sure you know all the details of the route you are planning to use, and that you have enough money on you to pay for your journey.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0In the same way that you would tell your loved ones if you are taking a walk, also make sure that someone knows your planned journey\u2019s details so that they can raise the alarm in case something goes wrong.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Avoid dark areas. It is best to wait for your bus or taxi in an area that is well-lit and where there are other people who would notice if something happened to you.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Keep your possessions close to you, so that you can be alerted immediately if something goes missing.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Many public transport vehicles have alarm or emergency buttons installed \u2013 make sure you know where the closest one to you is located, so that you can call for help in case of an emergency.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A number of municipalities have set up dedicated law enforcement units for their public transport services, including roving patrols on vehicles and at public transport interchanges. Keep their contact details pre-programmed on your mobile phone.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Pick the right seat.
