The player is currently under investigation\u00a0for allegedly being paid at least R75 000 to improperly influence an aspect of 2015\u2019s Ram Slam competition.<\/p>\n<p>This brings to the fore many vital questions around match fixing scandals but more importantly, what the consequences are if found guilty.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>What is match-fixing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Match fixing happens when a match is played to a completely or partially pre-determined result, which violates the rules of the game and often breaks the law. In particular, players are usually approached by bookmakers and bribed to throw a game or\u00a0 match or provide insider information to help throw the match.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>What are the consequences of match fixing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Match-fixing and spot fixing are both banned by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cricket.or.jp\/jca\/data\/pr05_ICC-Code-of-Conduct.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">ICC Cricket Code of Conduct<\/a>. Their code of conduct stipulates that players will be fined a percentage of their salary, banned from a number of matches or even banned from the sport for life or given relevant penalties for most offences if found guilty of any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gambling on matches (betting)<\/li>\n<li>Failing to perform in a match in return for a benefit, such as money or goods (match fixing)<\/li>\n<li>Inducing a player to perform one of the above two actions<\/li>\n<li>Failure to report certain incidents relating to match-fixing or gambling<\/li>\n<li>Other related offences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Players can also be criminally charged under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.za\/documents\/prevention-and-combating-corrupt-activities-act-0\" target=\"_blank\">Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act<\/a>, which contains a clause for sporting events.
