{"id":111011,"date":"2016-01-19T08:05:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-19T06:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/111011\/dealing-with-cyber-bullying\/"},"modified":"2016-01-20T08:54:27","modified_gmt":"2016-01-20T06:54:27","slug":"dealing-with-cyber-bullying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2016\/01\/19\/dealing-with-cyber-bullying\/","title":{"rendered":"Dealing with cyber-bullying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As technology advances and becomes a part of everyday life, bullying is no longer limited to school yards or street corners.<\/p>\n<p>Cyber-bullying can occur anywhere, even at home, through email, texts, or social media websites.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What is cyber-bullying?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cyber-bullying occurs when a child or teen uses the internet, emails, text messages, instant messaging, social media, online forums, chat rooms or other digital technology to harass, threaten or humiliate another child or teen.<\/p>\n<p>Almost anyone with an Internet connection or cellular phone can cyber-bully someone else, often without having to reveal their true identity and making no place, not even home, feel safe for the victim.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>The SAPS has compiled a list of tips to help children and parents deal with cyber-bullying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips for children or teens dealing with cyber-bullying:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not respond.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If someone bullies you, remember that your reaction is usually exactly what the bully wants.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not retaliate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Responding with similar threats reinforces the bully\u2019s behaviour.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Save the evidence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Online messages can usually be captured, saved and shown to someone who can help. Save evidence even if it is minor, as cyber-bullying can escalate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Block the bully.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use preferences or privacy tools to block the person.
