{"id":110241,"date":"2016-01-13T15:10:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T13:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/110241\/emergency-services-on-high-alert-for-flooding\/"},"modified":"2016-01-13T16:00:26","modified_gmt":"2016-01-13T14:00:26","slug":"emergency-services-on-high-alert-for-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2016\/01\/13\/emergency-services-on-high-alert-for-flooding\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency services on high alert for flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The South African Weather Services (SAWS) is warning of flash floods due to heavy rain expected today, in the Gauteng province.<\/p>\n<p>Localised flooding is anticipated in different areas around the province.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>As heavy rain is expected, rivers, canals and streams might experience a high volume of water, which might result in flash floods.<\/p>\n<p>The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS) would also like to caution residents in the metro be on high alert for such occurrences.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>Low lying areas are always subjected to flooding and people are advised to take extra precautions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Residents are advised to take the following safety tips into account:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid crossing swollen streams, canals and flooded rivers.<\/li>\n<li>Advise children not to play in flash flood areas.<\/li>\n<li>Parents should ensure that children&#8217;s routes to school are safe. If possible parents should accompany their children to school, especially pre-school and primary school children.<\/li>\n<li>Motorists should avoid flooded subways.<\/li>\n<li>If trapped in flooding while in the vehicle, abandon it and climb to higher ground.<\/li>\n<li>If river bridges are covered by flood water, turn back and use alternative routes.
