{"id":108091,"date":"2015-12-27T06:12:00","date_gmt":"2015-12-27T04:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/108091\/safety-tips-when-swimming-in-the-sea\/"},"modified":"2015-12-25T21:55:16","modified_gmt":"2015-12-25T19:55:16","slug":"safety-tips-when-swimming-in-the-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2015\/12\/27\/safety-tips-when-swimming-in-the-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Safety tips when swimming in the sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many of us will be setting off to the coast for a well-deserved summer holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things to remember when heading for a swim in the sea or a day at the beach:<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Always swim or surf at a beach patrolled by surf lifesavers or lifeguards.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Swim between the red and yellow flags, as these mark the safest areas to swim.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid swimming alone or unsupervised.<\/li>\n<li>Float with a rip current. Do not swim against it.<\/li>\n<li>If you get into difficulty\/trouble, stay calm, float and raise one arm until help arrives.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t run and dive into the water, even if you checked for hazards earlier, as conditions can change.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t swim directly after a meal.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.<\/li>\n<li>If you are unsure of the conditions, ask a surf lifesaver or lifeguard.<\/li>\n<li>Read the signs. If a beach is closed don&#8217;t swim there.<\/li>\n<li>Use 30+ sunscreen, wear a shirt and a wide-brimmed hat and remember to reapply sunscreen after swimming.<\/li>\n<li>Take only aluminium cans to the beach.
