{"id":104702,"date":"2015-11-13T09:45:00","date_gmt":"2015-11-13T07:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/104702\/life-stops-without-water\/"},"modified":"2015-11-16T09:20:04","modified_gmt":"2015-11-16T07:20:04","slug":"life-stops-without-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/develop.citizen.co.za\/germiston-city-news\/news-headlines\/2015\/11\/13\/life-stops-without-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Life stops without water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a drought gripping the country, many Germiston residents have been feeling the effects of little or no water at all.<\/p>\n<p>Many suburbs in the city have been left without water for days on end and residents want answers.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>They are also concerned by the fact that it appears that the metro shows no concern about water leaks or the wastage of water in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Wychwood resident Rudy Esterhuizen told the GCN that, with water restrictions being a reality, one would think that the metro would attend to all damaged water pipes and leaks.<\/p><div class=\"stream-item stream-item-in-post stream-item-inline-post aligncenter\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis is not the case,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past six weeks I have reported a water leak in Graham Road twice and nothing has been done about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe water has now been running for a couple of months.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104703\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104703\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2015\/11\/46GCNGENERALPEOPMH2_22402.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-104703\" src=\"https:\/\/germistoncitynews.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2015\/11\/46GCNGENERALPEOPMH2_22402-520x390.jpg\" alt=\"Rudy Esterhuizen, from Wychwood, took this photo of a water leak in Graham Road. Although the leak has been reported a number of times over the past six weeks, it has not been repaired.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Catryn Meyer took a photo of metro employees filling water tankers on Tuesday, at the corner of Stanhope and Watsonia roads, in Wychwood.<\/p>\n<p>The water was just left spraying from the connection and the employees didn\u2019t do anything to stop it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResidents need to adhere to the water restrictions, but it appears municipal workers do not,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe amount of water that was running down the street could water a whole road\u2019s gardens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I tried to speak to the workers about it, they swore at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9 Kleynhans echoed these sentiments and said that he had reported a burst water pipe on Lower Germiston Road, close to Nasmith Road, in March, this year, but to date it has not been repaired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA couple of months ago they simply broke a piece off the pavement in order for the water to flow into a drain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Wilma van Niekerk, a resident of Albemarle, told the GCN that she drives through the Germiston CBD every morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Meyer Street, the metro has dug a hole to fix a water pipe and they have left it like this for the past six months,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe water just keeps pouring out and grass is even growing in the hole now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt home, we sometimes don\u2019t even have water, but the metro does not put in the effort to fix the pipes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Duncan Wilson, a resident of Lambton, said: \u201cWe have been experiencing an interrupted water supply since Tuesday, last week, in our area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems that the water comes on very lightly in the day and that, towards 5pm in the afternoon, it&#8217;s switched off completely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m sure you can imagine that, by now, it has become very stressful and now we have noticed that there is air coming through the pipes, making a terrible noise, but the worst is that the water meter continues to run, so, for almost a week this has been happening with the meter running and, basically, we will be charged for air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Sunnyridge resident wanted to know why her children, grandchildren and herself have no water in the Sunnyridge and Primrose area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo much water is wasted by Rand Water and the municipalities and yet we are required to save water,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Sydney Smith asked the same question and said: \u201cThis is the second time in a year that we have had no water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demand proper answers to our questions and want the water supply to Sunnyridge and Primrose restored immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgeing infrastructure is not an excuse, because Rand Water should constantly repair and replace where and when necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wendy Morgan, chairman of the Primrose CPF, said: \u201cHow can the drought be blamed for a water shortage, when the Vaal Dam still has over 50 per cent capacity?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn previous years there has been only 11 per cent water in the dam and consumers still had water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResidents are at risk standing in long queues, in the dark, waiting to get water after a hard day at work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCriminals are waiting for someone to let down their guard; who is protecting them?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce again, the community themselves, who have volunteer CPF patrollers keeping an eye out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that there are many pensioners living in the area who cannot fetch water from the tanks &#8211; what should they do?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy should we, as a community, have to accept this kind of service for water or lack of water?&#8221; Morgan asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone needs to take charge and solve the problem, not put in place temporary measures and never fix the problem properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily Venter, who lives in School Avenue, Sunnyridge, told the GCN that they have not had a drop of water since November 9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is still off.
